Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the seven Central American nations, how many have only one coastline?

Answer: two

Belize borders only the Caribbean Sea, which includes the Gulf of Honduras. El Salvador borders only the Pacific Ocean. The other five countries (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama) border both the Caribbean and the Pacific.
2. Much of Central America is mountainous, but what is the highest point in this region?

Answer: Mt. Tajumulco

At 13,845 ft, Mt. Tajumulco just edges out Mt. Tacana for the highest peak in Central America. Both can be found in Guatemala. Chirripo Grande rises 12,530 ft in Costa Rica, while Baru is 11,400 ft and can be found in Panama.
3. A visitor will find the island of Coiba on the Pacific Coast of Panama. In what gulf is this island located?

Answer: Gulf of Chiriqui

Chiriqui lies on the northern Pacific Coast of Panama, while the Gulf of Panama lies further south and is where one may find an entrance into the Panama Canal. Fonseca is on the Pacific Coast of Honduras and Nicaya lies on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.
4. The famous Mosquito Coast can be found in Central America. In which two countries can this coast be found?

Answer: Honduras & Nicaragua

The Mosquito Coast is named for the Miskito Indians who originally inhabited the region. It was not named for mosquitoes, although you will certainly find those pests as well.
5. The Coco River helps create the boundary of which two Central American countries?

Answer: Nicaragua & Honduras

The Coco is only about 485 miles, although only about 140 miles are navigable. The Coco River has also been known as the Segovia River and the Wanks River.
6. What is the largest lake in all of Central America?

Answer: Lake Nicaragua

At 8264 square miles, Lake Nicaragua is the second largest lake in all of Latin America, after Lake Titicaca. It is also the largest international drainage basin in Central America.
7. What type of land is Panama?

Answer: isthmus

An isthmus is a thin stretch of land separating two bodies of water. Panama's geographic properties allowed it to be chosen as the site of the famous canal.
8. What river flows from Lake Nicaragua into the Caribbean Sea?

Answer: San Juan River

Nicaragua and Costa Rica have long argued over which nation has rights to the San Juan River. The Treaty of Cañas-Jérez was signed in 1858 granting Nicaragua ownership of the river and allowing Costa Rica commercial access to the river. Disputes over Costa Rica's usage of the river for tourism have continued to occur.
9. This mountain range lies on the border of Costa Rica and Panama.

Answer: Talamanca

Cerro Chirripo, or Chirripo Grande, is the highest peak in Costa Rica and can be found in the Talamanca Mountain Range as well as a mountain rain forest. Chirripo Peak is one of only two places in all of Central America with a glacial origin. The other can be found in Guatemala.
10. Temperature and location greatly affect the physical geography of a region. All of Central America lies in a region commonly known as what?

Answer: Tropical Zone

The Tropical Zone is the region that lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The region is generally quite hot, and can be both rainy and dry.
