It was named after a crew member from the French vessels, Naturaliste and Geographe, that sailed up the Swan River in 1801 and discovered it.

Answer: Mount Eliza

Mount Eliza consists of 1,000 acres of natural bushland known as Kings Park and contains a wonderful display of Western Australian wildflowers in the spring and also botanical gardens.

Answer: Carnac Island

Carnac Island is situated between Rottnest and Garden Islands and is very small. It is only 19 hectares in area. It is home to a large population of tiger snakes and a haven for seals and the rare Australian Sealion. It was used in the early days of the Swan River settlement as a penal facility for indigenous Australians.

Answer: The Eagles and the Dockers

The Dockers (full name Fremantle Dockers) are actually based at the Port of Fremantle. The Eagles (full name West Coast Eagles) have their headquarters in one of the northern suburbs of Perth.

Answer: Cricket

The initials WACA stand for Western Australian Cricket Association and the WACA is the home of the state cricket team, the Western Warriors.
6. Which important person visited Perth in October 2011 to open the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held there for the first time?

Answer: Queen Elizabeth II

This visit was important on two counts. Firstly it was the first time that Perth had hosted such an important occasion and secondly, at 85, it is doubtful that Perth people will get another chance to see the Queen in person.
7. Which state government leader was responsible for the installation of the Bell Tower which is situated on the banks of the Swan River on the Perth foreshore?

Answer: Richard Court

Richard Court, who was at the time Leader of the Liberal Party that was in power, instigated this installation so that, like other state capitals, Perth would have a unique tourist attraction. It houses the bells presented to Perth by the St. Martin in the Field Church in London, England.
8. Which edifice has a commanding position and looks down the length of St. George's Terrace, one of Perth's main thoroughfares?

Answer: The Barracks Arch

The entrance to the Old Barracks was preserved when they were demolished. It was restored and now is a reminder of our early colonial days. The State War Memorial stands on Mount Eliza and overlooks the city. A statue of Queen Victoria is also there. Yagan, a chief of the Swan River Tribe, is commemorated with a statue on Heirisson Island.
9. Each year in August is the annual Avon Descent. What type of an event is this?

Answer: White water event

The Avon Descent begins on the Avon River, a tributary of the Swan River, at the town of Northam, approximately 60 miles east of Perth and progresses into the Swan River and thence to Bayswater, a suburb close to the city. Several classes of boats compete (kayaks, surf skis and small power boats) and competitors come from all over the world for this event.
10. Which world-wide sporting event put Perth on the map in 1983?

Answer: The America's Cup

The America's Cup had been held by America for 132 years. Sponsored by a local entrepreneur, Alan Bond, the yacht, Australia 2, representing the Royal Perth Yacht Club, won in convincing style and so ended the unbroken American record.
