Originally known as Cowford, the city was renamed "Jacksonville" in 1822, taking the name of Florida's first military governor and later US President, Andrew Jackson.

"The Great Fire of 1901" left more than 10,000 people homeless and ravaged 146 city blocks. It started as a kitchen fire in a mattress factory and later spread to envelop the city, resulting in seven deaths.
