quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mt. Aconcagua is known for its regular eruptions, which occur about every twenty years.

Answer: False

Aconcagua, at 22,837 feet, is the tallest mountain in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres, but it is not a volcano. It is located in west-central Argentina, about nine miles from the Chilean border.
2. Tucked between Argentina and Brazil, with around 400 miles of Atlantic coastline, is the second-smallest country in South America. Can you name it?

Answer: Uruguay

Unlike its neighbors to the west, Uruguay is not at all mountainous. It's mostly low-lying grassland and the country tends to be humid, with a subtropical climate. Because it lacks mountains and forests, high winds can pose a problem across the country. There are three major rivers: the Rio Yi; Rio Negro; and Rio Uruguay, the latter forming the border with Argentina. The Rio Negro is dammed at one point and the resulting artificial lake is the largest man-made lake on the continent.

The smallest country in South America is Suriname.

The photo is of a beach on Uruguay's Atlantic coast, Cuchilla Alta.
3. Guyana is another small country in South America, located on the northern coast of the continent. Most of Guyana's population lives on the Atlantic coastal plain, but the majority of the country consists of what natural feature?

Answer: Forests

About 80% of Guyana is forested, nearly half of which is rainforest.

While the timber industry is prominent in the country, significant efforts are underway in Guyana to restore forestland that is being harvested. In 2014, for example, the country implemented a $500 million reforestation project paid for by funds set aside by its own government.
4. Argentina is known for its grasslands, the famed Pampas. In what area of the country are they found?

Answer: They are in the central portion of the country.

The Pampas cover nearly 300,000 square miles; in addition to the southeastern portion of Argentina, they cover virtually all of neighboring Uruguay and a small area of southern Brazil. The Pampas are home both to farm crops and the cattle industry.
5. Brazil borders all but two of the countries in South America. Which two?

Answer: Chile and Ecuador

Brazil is a huge country - the fifth largest in the world, occupying nearly 50% of the area of the continent. It has an extensive Atlantic coastline to the east, and its western border extends to less than 500 miles from the Pacific Ocean as well.
6. Which two countries in South America, respectively, are major producers of flowers and beef?

Answer: Colombia and Argentina

After the Netherlands, Colombia is the world's largest marketer of cut flowers, a billion dollar industry there. Up to 75% of the cut flowers sold in the US are from Colombia. Its #1 seller, not surprisingly, is the rose.

Argentina has long been known as one of the world's major producers and exporters of beef.
7. How long is Paraguay's coastline, and on which ocean does it lie?

Answer: The country is landlocked; it has no coastline.

Paraguay is surrounded by Argentina to the west and south, Brazil to the east, and Bolivia to the north. It's roughly bisected by the Rio Paraguay, with swampy lowlands to the west and grassland and forest to the east. The country is vulnerable to high winds because it doesn't have mountains to block air flow. Its climate is generally subtropical/tropical, with wet and dry seasons.

The photo is taken near a dammed area in a river in the southern part of the country.
8. Although most people may think of Portuguese and Spanish as the languages of South America, one country on the continent has Dutch as its official tongue. It also houses the one of the largest wooden structures in the Western Hemisphere, the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Can you name the country?

Answer: Suriname

Suriname became independent of the Netherlands in 1975. In its capital of Paramaribo stands the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral which is constructed of wood. It was completed in 1901, although it was consecrated six years earlier. Its interior is created of unpainted Suriname cedar.

In addition to its religious function, the cathedral is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Suriname.
9. The movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was a blockbuster in the US in the 1970s. It recounted the saga of two US outlaws who fled to a South American country when things got too hot for them in the US. To which country, whose capital city's name translates to "peace", did they go to seek shelter?

Answer: Bolivia

Bolivia has two capitals: La Paz, whose name translates to "peace" and is the site of the legislative and executive branches of the government; and Sucre (which translates to "sugar", incidentally), home to the judicial branch.

Although the movie depicted the outlaws as dying in a gunfight in Bolivia, there is some disagreement about whether this actually happened or not. Cassidy's younger sister wrote a book about him, in which she states she reunited with him in 1925, seventeen years after his supposed death.

The photo depicts both the official flag of Bolivia (in the rear) and the flag of the indigenous Andean peoples, which includes people from Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru.
10. The spectacled bear is the only species of bear native to South America. Its preferred habitat is in something known as the "cloud forest". Where is the cloud forest located?

Answer: Andes Mountains

The cloud forest is a tropical or subtropical area that is both mountainous and humid. It is cloudy nearly all the time and often foggy.

The cloud forest is disappearing through development, and the spectacled bear is in danger of extinction due both to habitat loss and poaching.
