Qatar is a small country on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula where it juts out into the Persian Gulf. A small strait separates the country of Qatar from the island nation of Bahrain to the north. The country's location on the Persian Gulf has caused much of its culture and industry to be dependent on the waters that surround three sides of the nation.

One of the best places to buy pearls is Qatar. For centuries, pearl diving was one of the main sources of income for this country. Both of these occurred between June and September, the dates varying due to weather.

The industry crashed in the 1930s with the advent of Japanese artificial pearls and the discovery of oil. Some very nice pearls are available to tourists who travel to the area and pearl diving boats can still be seen in the waters off the coast, although very few in number.

Qahwa helw is a very fine coffee that is drunk on special occasions.

It is a sweet coffee with an orange color, the flavor is enhanced with saffron, cardamom, and sugar.
