Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Washington: the National Forest surrounding which feature has been recovering from a cataclysmic event in 1980?

Answer: Mt. St. Helens

A 5.1 earthquake caused Mt. St. Helens to literally "blow its top" on May 18th, 1980, knocking down trees in over 230 square miles of surrounding Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The mountain and immediately-surrounding area has been preserved as the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.
2. The name of which U.S. National Forest is an English translation of the name of the state where it is located?

Answer: Green Mountain

Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest, combined with the Finger Lakes National Forest, covers 416,000 of Vermont's 5.9 million acres of land. The state name likely comes from the French "les Verts Monts", although it is uncertain what the "green" refers to. The leading arguments are either for the vegetation or the predominant rocks, a metamorphosed shale.
3. Which National Forest is located along the only waterway that penetrates the Cascade mountains, a route famously used in the early 19th century?

Answer: Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River allowed Lewis and Clark access to the Pacific through the Cascade Mountains. The Gorge is an area of 80 miles in length, with a depth up to 4,000 feet (1,200 meters).
4. Montana contains a National Forest named for which famous--some would say infamous--Civil War and Indian Wars figure?

Answer: Custer

The Custer National Forest does not include the site of the Little Bighorn Battlefield, but may be considered "close" by Montana standards - 200 miles. Lt. Colonel George A. Custer is an interesting and controversial figure; he was an acknowledged "media personality" in his time, and no doubt would be pleased with the land and monuments that bear his name.
5. Missouri: which native son lent his name to the only National Forest in the state?

Answer: Mark Twain

The Mark Twain National Forest covers almost 1.5 million acres in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, 11% of the forested area of Missouri. Although it isn't the largest National Forest, it does have the distinction of encompassing the most counties: 29.
6. Minnesota: which National Forest shares a name with a Great Lake?

Answer: Superior

Superior National Forest is located in the Arrowhead region of Minnesota, a triangular-shaped region defined by the U.S.-Canada border and the northwest shore of Lake Superior. Superior National Forest surrounds the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area, the most-visited wilderness area in the U.S.
7. Which western U.S. National Forest is located in only one of the two states that share the pictured body of water?

Answer: Lake Tahoe

Tahoe National Forest is solely in nine counties of California; the Nevada portion is called the Humboldt-Toiyabe. The National Forest does not include Lake Tahoe itself; that is managed by the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, which controls 78% of the land surrounding the lake.
8. Arizona: which National Forest has a name that translates as "fool" or "silly" in English?

Answer: Tonto

The Tonto is one of the most-visited National Forests in the U.S. with almost six million visitors in 2013. Winter visitors flock to the rock canyons and deserts for their brief periods of bloom. In summer, the many man-made lakes draw people looking for relief from the heat.
9. California: which trees, the largest tree species in the world, lend their name to a National Forest?

Answer: Sequoia

Sequoia National Forest is in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, between the town of Bakersfield and Death Valley. This National Forest contains the world's largest concentration of Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), the largest living single organisms by volume on Earth.
10. Great Falls, Montana is the headquarters for which National Forest, one of the oldest in the U.S.?

Answer: Lewis and Clark

The Lewis and Clark expedition passed through this area of Montana in 1804 and 1806. This land was first set aside in 1897 as the Lewis and Clark Forest Reserve, one of the first parcels of public land to be reserved for managed use.
