Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alright. Let's start with some basics. Russia is by far the largest country in area, followed by Canada, China and the US, respectively. Which is the NINTH largest?

Answer: Kazakhstan

A rather large (at 2,717,000sq km) and sparsly populated country, once a former member of the Soviet Union. Will probably enter the news sometime in the future due to its combination of vast natural resources (notably oil and gas) and harsh government.
2. As of 1999, which country in Europe (excluding Russia) had/has the largest population?

Answer: Germany

It's Germany with 82 million, followed by France at almost 61 million, the UK at 59 million, and Italy at over 57 million.
3. Again, as of 1999, three countries were tied at having the lowest population densities. Which of these was NOT one of those three?

Answer: Canada

The other three had a total average of only two people per square kilometer. Canada was not far behind with only three.
4. As of 2000, which country had the highest percent of its population under fifteen?

Answer: Yemen

It's Yemen with just over 50% of its population. That's what I call a baby boom.
5. Ladies: If you're looking for a husband or boyfriend, you have a really good chance in this country where for every 100 women there are 195 men. (2000 figures)

Answer: United Arab Emirates

This phenomenon runs all through the Middle East apparently. This is primarily the result of importing workers (mainly male) from other countries. In China, it is a result of mostly illegal abortions as a result of rigorous family planning by the government.
6. All right guys: This is the country with the highest percentage of women; for every 100 ladies there are 86 men (Again 2000 figures). Which is it?

Answer: Latvia

Again, as with the previous question, I see a geographic trend, this time in Eastern Europe. However, it's not as profound as the near two to one ratio in favor of the ladies in the UAE. That doesn't seem right.
7. I have to admit that I have it pretty good here in the US, but apparently not as good as they do in this "Low" country with an average GDP per head of 42,930 US dollars...

Answer: Luxembourg

This figure I realize can be deceiving because it is an average. If five people made 50 trillion a year, there's room for a few poor people at the bottom. The figure in the US by the way, is around 33,540.
8. This country enjoyed the highest average annual percent increase in real GDP through 1990-99...

Answer: Bosnia

Believe it or not it's Bosnia at 35.2%, blowing away China who came in second at 10.7%. Keep in mind this is a percent, not a dollar amount, but still good news for the Balkan state.
9. My neighbors to the north in Canada haven't been mentioned too much so far, but the fact is they lead the world in ownership of what non-essential home appliance per every 100 households?

Answer: VCR

89.9 per every 100 homes (who knew?). I'm not sure what year this is from (sorry). Guess they really love their movies up there. The US and UK were not far behind.
10. Finally, this country recycled a whopping 91 percent of its total of glass in 1997...

Answer: Switzerland

Actually the US didn't make the list, which went down to 34 percent.
