Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following three-letter combinations begins the name of the most countries?

Answer: Mal

The countries whose names begin with 'mal': Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali and Malta. Coming in second are those countries whose names begin with 'bel', namely: Belarus, Belgium and Belize.
2. The only countries in the world where Chinese is the primary native language spoken at home are China and Taiwan.

Answer: False

This question was a little tricky; the other choice would be tiny Singapore in Southeast Asia, where more than 3/4 of the population is Chinese!
3. How many countries in the world have German as their chief native tongue (i.e. more people speak German as a native language than any other)?

Answer: 4

More than you thought, perhaps? The obvious one is Germany, and it's probably fairly well known that a majority of Austrians speak German. Switzerland is a bit more tricky, as there are 4 official languages in that country (German, French, Italian and Romansch), but German is the most widely spoken. The sneakiest of the bunch is tiny little Liechtenstein, population 32,000. A majority of Liechtensteiners speak German as their native tongue, and it is also the official language!
4. A physical geography question: which of these countries is not considered to be 'elongated'?

Answer: Philippines

An elongated country is one whose length is much longer than its width, in simple terms. Another requirement is that the land must be continuous. The Philippines is long and thin, but made up of islands. It is categorized as an archipelago.
5. Which of these countries has no disputed or undefined borders?

Answer: San Marino

Tiny San Marino has clearly defined borders with its one neighbor, Italy. Qatar's borders with both the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are undefined, though no real dispute exists in that case. China and Pakistan share an disputed border, and both of those countries also share disputed borders with India.

These disputes have been the cause of a number of wars and conflicts. In the past, China also had border disputes with the former Soviet Union and with Vietnam. These have been resolved.
6. What is the largest country (by area) in the world that has a land border on only one other country?

Answer: Canada

Unbelievable as it seems, the 2nd largest country in the world only has one neighbor, the United States. The United States is the 4th largest country and only has 2 neighbors (Canada and Mexico). The largest country in the world, Russia, borders 13 countries, while China, the world's third largest country borders a whopping 14!
7. What is the longest river whose drainage basin is located entirely in one country (in other words, the longest river only located in one country)?

Answer: Yangtze

The Yangtze River is entirely located in China, as is its drainage basin; it stretches a total 3,720 miles (5,980 km). The Mississippi-Missouri-Jefferson-Beaverhead-Red Rock river system is 3,740 miles long (6,020 km), but its drainage basin is not entirely located in the United States, parts of the Milk River and others drain southern Canada.

The Amazon is a longer river, but is also located in Peru (with its drainage basin covering several other countries as well). The Yenisey-Angara-Selenga-Ider system (and drainage basin) is located in Russia but is only 3,650 miles long (5,870 km).
8. Which country is the smallest in the Western Hemisphere?

Answer: Saint Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis, two islands that were collectively a former colony of Great Britain, only encompass a total of 104 sq. miles (269 sq. km). This makes the country the smallest in North America and the Western Hemisphere. The smallest countries in the world are, by far, Monaco at only .75 sq. miles (1.95 sq. km) and Vatican City at only .15 sq. miles (.37 sq. km)!
9. The largest landlocked country in the world is Kazakhstan in Asia, with Mongolia (also in Asia) being the second largest landlocked country. What is the largest landlocked country outside of Asia?

Answer: Chad

Neither the Democratic Republic of Congo (aka Zaire) nor Iran are landlocked countries, so they are automatically disqualified. Chad is the third largest landlocked country in the world (495,871 sq. miles/1,284,640 sq. km), and is located in Africa. The next largest landlocked country after Chad is Mali, also in Africa, and after that Niger.

The largest landlocked country outside Asia or Africa is Bolivia, in South America.
10. Many countries have different local names compared with the English names by which we know them. Which country is called 'Shqipėria' by the residents there?

Answer: Albania

Albania's full local name, in the Albanian language, is 'Republika e Shqipėrisė'.
