"The Great War", or "The War To End All Wars" as it was also known claimed about 16 million lives, both military and civilian, on all sides. More than 20 million were injured.

While it was not the mightiest maritime disaster in terms of loss of life, so many factors intertwined to make the story of the Titanic such a powerful and memorable one: It was her maiden voyage; her owners had declared her "unsinkable" there were too few lifeboats to take all on board; and the great and the good as well as the poor died.

The first warning of the iceberg came at 11:40pm on April 14. Thirty-seven seconds later the ship hit the iceberg. Of the 2,233 people on board, 1,517 died.

The first atomic bomb was detonated in May 1945 in Alamogordo NM.

Hindenburg set off from Frankfurt on May 3rd 1937 carrying 36 passengers and 61 crew members. Poor weather hampered her landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Base and she caught fire on the final approach to the mooring mast. Thirteen passengers and 22 crew died, along with one member of the ground mooring party.
