Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the German plan that involved invading Belgium in order to defeat France before fighting Russia?

Answer: Schlieffen Plan

Germany used the Schlieffen Plan to invade France but had to go through neutral Belgium, which led to Britain declaring war on Germany. The plan was devised in 1905 but later revised. The original plan envisaged a broader 'sweep' and the violation of Dutch as well as Belgian and Luxembourg neutrality.
2. Which of the following was NOT an Allied power?

Answer: Bulgaria

Romania, Serbia, and Albania were all Allied powers which had fought against Bulgaria in the Second Balkan War (1913).
3. Why did the United States enter the war in 1917?

Answer: The resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare by Germany in 1917

The sinking of the Lusitania in May 1915 with the loss of 128 American civilians had done much to turn public opinion in the USA against Germany. However, those who give it as the main or sole reason for the USA entering World War I need to account for the fact that 22 months passed between the sinking of the liner and American entry in the war.
4. What brought World War I to an end?

Answer: Almost continuous German retreat since August 1918

After the 1917 October Revolution in Russia the new Bolshevik took Russia out of the war. This was a plus for the Central Powers who now only had to fight a one front war. However, without victory on the Western Front this victory over Russia was of almost no practical use to Central Powers.
5. What was the name of the battle that threw the advancing German armies back from Paris?

Answer: First Battle of the Marne

This battle, fought from 6 to 13 September 1914 marked the final failure of the Schlieffen Plan. The attempted quick, knock-out blow against France had failed.
6. What triggered World War I?

Answer: The assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand

The Balkan wars are often blamed for the start of the war but the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand followed the annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
7. Which country helped Serbia in the Balkan Wars?

Answer: Russia

Russia had a treaty with Serbia. Russia was supposed to fight with them but never did for fear of a bigger war.
8. What was the battle in which the Germans surrounded Russian troops?

Answer: Tannenberg

The Germans surrounded the Russians to cause them to run out of supplies and forced to surrender. The actual name of the battle was based on a battle fought in 1410 between a Polish-Lithuanian alliance and the Teutonic Knights, in which the latter suffered a severe defeat.
9. On 30 September 1918 Ludendorff told the German General Staff that Germany had no realistic hope of winning the war and would have to seek an armistice. Who, according to Ludendorff, was to sign it?

Answer: A democratic, civilian government (not in existence at the time)

Germany did, in fact, proceed to try to turn itself into a parliamentary democracy in October 1918, as requested by Ludendorff. This development was, however, overtaken by the revolution of November 1918.
10. What name is generally given to the claim by German nationalists (including the Nazis) that Germany had not been militarily defeated in World War I but had been betrayed on the home front by subsersives, especially Socialists, Communists, liberals and labour leaders?

Answer: the stab-in-the-back legend

The new republic was burdened by this legend from the very outset. It was a conspiracy theory, and was usually antisemitic in orientation, too. At the end of World War II, the Allies made sure that the military top brass signed the unconditional surrender and were filmed doing so, too.
