Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the word 'bonsai' mean?

Answer: planted in a tray

It is arguable what the origins of 'bonsai' initially were, some claiming that it begun in China with Buddhist monks there. Today we associate it with Japan but it is fashionable throughout Asia just as Buddhism.
2. Bonsai are primarily indoor plants.

Answer: false

Absolutely not! Remember they are trees after all albeit miniature and like their larger counterparts they require the same environment to thrive. For instance the Japanese Red Maple needs the autumn cooling for it to tell the leaves to change color and to winterize. For maples this extremely important for their survival and it can only get this by spending some of its life outdoors.
3. Exposed root systems are desireable in the art of bonsai.

Answer: True

There are many different disciplines under the umbrella of Bonsai. One of these disciplines is a style known as 'Neagari', this technique brings about the development of a tree's root system to accentuate the tree.
4. Only one bonsai tree should be planted per container.

Answer: False

Not at all, there is a style of this art called 'Yose Ue' which simulates a forest by using numerous trees and creating a look of a miniature stand of trees.
5. What should be considered when buying a 'bonsai'?

Answer: All of these

The Internet and chain stores have made it quite easy to purchase 'bonsai' but if you try to raise it in the improper environment then it will die. A good way to go about purchasing a 'bonsai' is to know what its needs are before the responsibility of care is yours.
6. The largest Bonsai park in the world is located in Japan.

Answer: False

I was surprised to find that it wasn't Japan but Korea who holds this honor. The park is named Bunjae Artpia and it's located on Cheju Island.
7. When looking for potential bonsai specimens the national parks are a good place to look.

Answer: False

I wouldn't advise it unless you want to do bonsai workshops in prison. If purchasing trees and or shrubs is too expensive for you try going to your local nursery. I've gotten many good juniper trees to cut back and form for under five dollars. In fact if you can find damaged ones that are cheaper it's all the better.
8. 'Topiary' and 'Bonsai' are interchangeable terms.

Answer: False

There are several differences between the two art forms. Probably the biggest between them is that topiary does not have to be miniature but it can be. Topiary has its origins among the Greeks and Romans and goes back to over 2,200 years ago. Bonsai does not go back that far in history and the scale is limited to miniaturization.
9. If you ordered a 'Shito bonsai' you would be getting what?

Answer: The smallest available in class sizing

Bonsai have a classification structure going from the Imperial which, is the largest down to the 'shito' which is usually around two inches and is potted in a thimble sized container. These are very delicate to maintain due to the lack of water and nutrients in the small pot. I'd like to include here a web site where you can see a most amazing collection of these specimens http://www.bonsaiprimer.com/mame/mame.html. Enjoy!
10. Steel wire is most commonly used for forming branches into desired positions.

Answer: False

Steel as a rule is avoided because over time it rusts. Instead copper or aluminum is used in place of steel as it will not rust and it tends to be slightly more malleable.
