Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is a poison?

Answer: Belladonna

Baba is a rum soaked cake, ummmm! Barbue is a fish and brodo is a broth. Belladonna, however, is not called deadly nightshade for nothing.
2. There is another poison in this quartet. But which one?

Answer: Aconite

Aceto is vinegar. Aioli is a beautiful, garlic mayonnaise from Provence in France. Arancia is the Italian for orange.
Aconite (monkshood), contains a deadly poison.
3. Which of these is an item of clothing?

Answer: Fedora

Flageolets are small beans, a flounder is a fish and fidelini is a type of pasta. I know people say "I'll eat my hat", but I don't think they had a fedora in mind.
4. Which of these would not be on the menu?

Answer: Kepi

A kepi is a French military cap with a horizontal peak, so I would not recommend eating it. Kale is a vegetable, kohl rabi is also a vegetable. Kebabs are small cubes of meat roasted on a skewer.
5. Which of these is definitely not edible?

Answer: Bril

Brebis, Brie and Bresse are all types of cheese. Bril was a Flemish painter who lived from 1554-1626. Of course, you know brill,(2 ls), is an edible fish.
6. One of these items would never appear on a menu in a restaurant, do you know which one?

Answer: Lorca

Lorca is a town in Spain. Lychee are fruit, leek is a vegetable and a leveret is a baby hare. A leveret can be eaten, if you are that sort. I would not eat one.
7. No matter how hungry you become you would be most unlikely to eat one of these.

Answer: Knout

A knout was a scourge for flogging criminals in Tsarist Russia, before the reign of Nicholas I. In its commonest form it consisted of plaited hide thongs sometimes interwoven with wire. Ruff, Filo and Suet are all forms of pastry. Suet is also a type of animal fat.
8. Which of this quartet cannot be eaten?

Answer: Penicuik

Penicuik is a town in Scotland about 10 miles from Edinburgh. The name means cuckoo's hill.
9. If one of these is on the menu, give it a miss.

Answer: Assegai

An assegai is an African spear, refrain from eating it is my advice. A skate is a fish, gnocchi are dumplings and slagroom is Dutch for whipped cream.
10. Which of these is not edible?

Answer: Quern

A quiche is a savoury tart, queso and queijo are cheeses. A quern is a small hand held pepper mill.
