Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Abernethy Biscuits were named after a town in Perthshire.

Answer: False

They are actually named after a Dr Abernethy, who suggested adding caraway seeds to the final recipe.
2. Arbroath Toastie: these are made with egg, cheese and which type of fish?

Answer: Smoked Haddock

Arbroath is famous for its smoked haddock - they even made an ice cream with that flavour a few years back.
3. Finnan Haddies: lightly smoked and delicately flavoured haddock, but which songwriter famously used them in his lyrics to rhyme with "daddy"?

Answer: Cole Porter

He used it in the song, "My Heart Belongs to Daddy", from the 1938 musical, "Leave It To Me".
4. Cock-a-Leekie: a traditional soup made with chicken and leeks, but what would you add to it to make it "Auld Reekie"?

Answer: Whisky

That's how you get variety in Scottish food - add whisky! Did you know that you could also add prunes to the dish, if desired?

Edit: I've added "whiskey" as a correct answer, although that refers to the Irish drink. Don't say I'm not kind!
5. Friar's Omelette - what is unusual about it?

Answer: It contains fruit

You can use apples, rhubarb, or blackberries.
6. Roastit Bubbly-Jock: what is the "bubbly-jock"?

Answer: A turkey

Apparently the name comes from the 'gobbling' sound the bird makes, but being Scottish it could have any number of local and regional definitions.
7. Atholl Brose: this drink has three simple ingredients; which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Ginger

Tradition has it that in 1475 the Earl of Atholl filled a small well with the concoction to help capture a rebel clan chief.
8. Melrose Creams: What fruit forms the basis of this dish?

Answer: Pineapples & Apricots

Tinned fruit with single and double cream, and a cherry or grated chocolate to garnish.
9. Clootie Dumpling: What exactly is "clootie"?

Answer: The cloth it was cooked in

You don't have to use a cloth now, but it was traditional to put the ingredients (including a silver bawbee at Christmas) into a cloth before boiling it in water.
10. Chicken: which of the following is not a real Scottish dish?

Answer: Chicken Parlies

"Parlies" were actually small ginger and treacle biscuits.

Hope you enjoyed playing this quiz, and lang may yer lum reek!
