Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What game, released in 1959 by Parker Brothers, is described as "The world conquest game"?

Answer: Risk

"Risk" was designed by French film director Albert Lamorisse. The game is played on a board depicting the world divided into 42 territories. Each played is, secretly, given a mission that he/she has to accomplish in order to win the game. The mission normally involves the capture of specific territories or the destruction of enemy armies.

The game is played by 3 to 6 players. The other three games are similar to "Risk", two of them "Axis & Allies" and "Attack" are set during WWII and the third during the age of Imperialism (1830 - 1900).
2. What game is described as the "The code breaking game of cunning and logic" and was released by Waddingtons in 1984?

Answer: Master Mind

This is a two player game. One of the players (code setter) sets up a colour code, selecting four pegs from six different colours, and the opponent (code breaker) has to discover this code in a maximum 10 tries. The code breaker places in a row for coloured pegs and the code setter indicates by placing white and red indicators the result of each row.

A red indicator denotes that a peg correctly matched one of the hidden pegs and a white indicator means that the colour was correct by not in the right position. "Othello" or "Reversi" is a game of strategy played on an 8 x 8 board and "Go" is a Chinese game of strategy played on 19 x 19 line grid.
3. What game, published in 1981 by Parker Brothers, has this quote from Alexander Pope "What mighty contests rise from trivial things" printed on the side of the box?

Answer: Trivial Pursuit

"Trivial Pursuit" is the brain child of Canadians Scott Abbot and Chris Haney. The game is played by 2 to 6 players on board that consists of a circular track with spaces in seven different colours. Six of the colours correspond to question categories while the last colour gives a new dice roll. Six spaces along the track are "pie spaces", and from these there are "spokes" of track leading to the middle of the board.

In the original edition the six question categories were: Geography, Entertainment, History, Arts & Literature, Science & Nature and Sports & Leisure. Winner is the played that loads his playing piece with all six pies and answers correctly an extra question whilst being in the middle of the board. "Bezzerwizzer" is a quiz game from Denmark, "Fauna" is a game with 360 animals on big cards and "Facts in Five" is played by drawing five class and category cards.
4. What game's description, produced by J.D. Spear & Sons, is "The world's leading word game", according to the original UK edition?

Answer: Scrabble

The game is played by 2 to four players on a square board with a 15 x 15 grid of cells. Each grid position can hold one letter tile. The board is marked with some special squares that afford the player to score more points. These special squares signify triple-words, double-words, triple-letters and double-letters. Each player has a rack on which he places seven tiles that are picked from a bag.

The object of the game is to form words and gain points by taking advantage of the special squares. In the game of "Scattergories" you list items within a given category that begin with a particular letter, in "Pictionary" you draw a word or phrase in a way that can be identified by your team and "Upwords" is a game similar to "Scrabble" but you can build words by stacking the tiles as well.
5. What game is called "The great race game" (1972 edition) and was manufactured in the UK by John Waddington Ltd?

Answer: Totopoly

The game is played on a two sided board by 2 to 6 players. The first side of the board deals with events before the horse race and the other side deals with the actual running of the race. The object of the game is to own the horse that wins the race. Each player starts with £700 and with this money can buy horses either by lot or by auction.

Then the players go once around the Training Track of the game board with each of their horses. Here the players collect advantage and disadvantage cards to be used in the race and make or lose money that can be bet on the race. Once the players have gone round the Training Track, the game board is flipped to reveal the Race Track.

The players may enter only 3 horses into the race. The players may bet on any horse to win.

After the betting is over the race begins. The players roll one die and move their horses in turn and can use the cards, earned during the first half of the game, when they feel it is to their advantage.
6. What game, produced in the UK by Waddington's (for the 1961 edition), is described as a "Property trading game"?

Answer: Monopoly

"Monopoly" is played by 2 to 6 players on a board that is divided into properties, railway stations, utilities, chance & community chest places, income tax and super tax spots. The four corners of the board are marked as Go, Jail/Just visiting, Free Parking and Go to Jail. Each side of the board has different coloured sets of properties.

There are 6 sets consisting of three properties and 2 sets consisting of two properties. The object of the game is to buy and develop property by building houses and hotels are receiving rent from the players that stop on these properties. Each player starts with £1500 and a game piece and moves this piece around the board by rolling two dice and moving the appropriate number of spaces from its previous position.

A player can purchase a property when the game piece lands in an unoccupied space or pay the appropriate rent to the owner of the place. The other three options fall under the category "Financial" board games.
7. What game, released by Mayfair Games in 1995, is called "Game of discovery, settlement and trade"?

Answer: Settlers of Catan

"Settlers of Catan" was designed by Klaus Teuber. The game is played by 3 or 4 players. The players build settlements, cities and roads using resources that are earned during the course of the game. Players can trade resources with other players. The first player to accumulate 10 points wins the game. Building the longest road or having the largest army earns extra points. Extra points are also gained from development cards.

The other three options move along similar lines to the "Settlers of Catan".
8. What game, published by Ravensburger in 1954, is described as "A travel game of strategy and planning?"
