Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where would you be if you were tucking into moules-frites, a bottle of pils and a few Leonidas chocolates?

Answer: Belgium

Moules-frites are mussels served in their shells, with French fries on the side. The Belgians love to put mayonnaise on their French fries!
2. In which country would you typically enjoy a ploughman's lunch and Branston pickles?

Answer: England

Branston Pickle is a sweet and spicy vegetable pickle of a chutney-like consistency, very popular in British pubs with a "ploughman's lunch" of bread and cheese, with perhaps a boiled egg and a few slices of cold meat.
3. The waiter brings you gyoza, donburi and and nice pot of gyokuro tea. Where are you?

Answer: Japan

Gyoza are seafood or vegetable dumplings. Donburi is a bowl of fish or meat served on rice and gyokuro is a Japanese green tea.
4. Haggis, oats porridge and a dram of whisky are what the locals like in which country?

Answer: Scotland

Haggis is a traditional Scottish dish consisting of sheep's liver, lungs and heart minced up, mixed with oats, onion, suet and spices, and stuffed into the animal's stomach, after which it is boiled for about three hours. It is considered a great delicacy and is typically served, with much ceremony, on Burns Night (25th January), when the Scots commemorate their national poet Robbie Burns.
5. They'll be offering you biltong, boerewors and bobotie if you travel to this country.

Answer: South Africa

Biltong is a form of jerky or spiced dried beef; boerewors (literally translated as "farmer's sausage") is a traditional beef sausage which has no links but is made in one long piece. It is mainly spiced with coriander. Bobotie is a curried mince flan, based on the Malay cuisine brought to the Cape by the house slaves of the original Dutch settlers in the 17th century.
6. Uitsmijter, poffertjes and a koffie verkeerd will be on the menu when you arrive in this hospitable land.

Answer: The Netherlands

Uitsmijter (literally "chucker-out": I have no idea why it is called this!) is fried ham and eggs with cheese, on toast. Poffertjies resemble small, sweet doughnuts smothered in cinnamon sugar. The name Koffie Verkeerd always amuses me: the Dutch like their coffee black or with a tiny dash of milk. That is what you get when you order Kofffie Normaal, or Normal Coffee. Koffie Verkeerd comes with a lot of milk, and is therefore called Wrong Coffee.
7. Wonton soup, Sichuan hotpot and green tea are only some of the great dishes you will enjoy at the local eateries in this country.

Answer: China

Wonton soup is a soup containing fried dumplings, while a Hotpot is a stew or casserole with a soup base. Sichuan hotpot is a particularly spicy regional dish. They love their hot chilies in Sichuan Province!
8. Vegemite, lamingtons and a stubby of XXXX ... if you stay long enough in this country, you will learn to love them!

Answer: Australia

Vegemite is a yeast-based dark brown sticky, salty spread, dearly beloved by Australians and inspiring fear and loathing in everyone else. A lamington is a square of sponge cake, dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut. Once again, dearly beloved by Australians, but regarded with suspicion by everybody else, until they taste them.

A stubby of XXXX is a short, squat bottle of Australian beer, with the XXXX logo on the bottle and pronounced "Four-ex".
9. If you are a tourist here, you may enjoy a delicious meal of nasi goreng and gado gado, followed by a tropical fruit salad containing durian, mango and rambutan.

Answer: Indonesia

Nasi goreng is a spicy, rice-based stir-fry dish while gado gado is a vegetable salad served with a peanut sauce.
10. When you are served Wiener schnitzel, Sacher torte and a double espresso topped with whipped cream, you know you have arrived in this city.

Answer: Vienna

Wiener schnitzel is a thin, crumbed and panfried veal cutlet and Sacher torte a rich cocolate cake. Both are considered part of the Austrian national cuisine.
