At the beginning of the film, we see Jack Silva, former Navy SEAL, getting off a plane at the airport in Benghazi. He is soon greeted by friend Tyrone "Rone" Woods, another former SEAL. After leaving the airport they head for the CIA Annex where Jack is introduced to special operatives Kris Paronto, Mark Geist, John Tiegen, and Dave Benton.

The way the operatives are to know if a local is 17-Feb or not is by giving them the "hang loose" sign. If the local responds with the "hang loose" sign, it is good assurance they are 17-Feb.

Most of the time, Amahl is seen in normal garb or his normal garb with a kevlar vest for protection on. With only his two bodyguards and a few 17-Feb fighters, the group are easily overridden by these attackers. However, a few of the 17-Feb members and Americans manage to escape.

The Ambassador is hidden in his safe room away from the attackers. Realizing they are unable to get to the Ambassador, the attackers bring in a tank of gasoline and light the main building on fire, killing the Ambassador.

6. After burning down the first target, the army of attackers leave and prepare for a second wave, this time headed to a second target. This time the six elite operatives engage the attackers. Where do the elite operatives go in order to prepare for the attack?

Answer: The building rooftops

The operatives spread out to the rooftops of the four buildings in the annex. The others inside turn off all of the outside lights, by Kris Paronto's request. The operatives all carry night vision goggles, so they feel no need for the outside lights to be on. Plus this gives them an advantage over the attackers.

In this wave, the attackers come with a strategy of brute force, but given the coverage of darkness, the operatives are able to take out the attackers that come through the gate with a weapon.

7. After taking care of their attackers, the operatives have "down time" where they sit back and talk. Some ask the people downstairs for a few things such as a lawn chair and coffee, while all collectively want an attack aircraft of some kind to come to their aid. Their down time is short lived, as people are coming through the annex gates. What kind of tactics do the attackers use in the third wave?

Answer: Stealth

Even though they are at a disadvantage because it is pitch black, the attackers spread out and stay as low and hidden as can be. By this time they realize the skill of the operatives, but try to take over the annex, once again to no avail. Even though they are using a stealth tactic, the six men on the rooftops are not called "special operatives" for no reason.

They take care of many attackers as possible until the remaining retreat again.

8. After gaining word of the attack in Benghazi, a special operative in Tripoli tells his chief that he needs a flight to Benghazi. Other than the fighters in Benghazi, Glen Doherty is the only special operative in the country of Libya and boards a flight to Benghazi with a few officers as well. What kind of special operative is Glen Doherty?

Answer: Navy SEAL

Glen Doherty is an ex-Navy SEAL serving in Tripoli. He is good friends with Tyrone Woods and Jack Silva and demanded to join them. He knows their skill level, but also knows how difficult the ongoing battle is. He is able to successfully land in Benghazi but has difficulty getting permission to leave the airport.

9. In the early morning of September 12th, Glen Doherty and the other soldiers he brought with him arrive at the annex. Shortly after their arrival, a fourth and final wave of attackers approaches the annex. What is the tactic used by the attackers?

Answer: Mortars

Realizing they are unable to beat the American fighters by close and long-range arms, they decide to use mortars to attack the base. All of the soldiers/operatives there realize there is nothing they can do about the mortars, so they do their best to stand watch and stay out of harms way.

The mortars cause a few injuries and two fatalities. Shortly after the mortar fire ceases, dozens of cars and trucks approach the annex gates. The operatives prepare for a fifth wave, but soon learn that all of those in the approaching vehicles are 17-Feb.

The Ambassador is killed in the first wave, by smoke inhalation. Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods are killed in the fourth and final wave by the mortars. Being CIA officers at the time, Glen and Tyrone receive stars on the memorial wall at Langley that showcases the CIA operatives fallen in the line of duty.
