Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Sanjana's fiancé leaves her for another woman, she decides to conquer her fear of flying to find him and win him back. On the flight she befriends Shekhar, a thief, who uses her to smuggle stolen jewellery through the customs at the airport. In a bid to get the necklace back from Sanjana, Shekhar ends up pretending to be her lover to make her ex-fiancé jealous. What's the name of the Hollywood original?

Answer: French Kiss

The original starred Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline in the lead roles while the rip-off, "Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha" (Love Had to Happen) had real life couple Kajol and Ajay Devgan. "French Kiss" was set in Paris whereas the Hindi version began in Paris but the action soon shifted to India.

Being a typical Bollywood film, the lead actor couldn't be shown as a petty thief. Thus, the reason behind his theft is that he required money to help his young nephew undergo a life saving operation. In the end, Sanjana pays for the stolen necklace and Shekhar is able to leave behind his life of crime so that the two can live happily ever after.
2. Pooja, the spoilt daughter of a widowed shipping tycoon, falls in love with a movie star. Her father disapproves of this match prompting her to run away. On her way to meet her lover, she meets a reporter, Raghu, who has just lost his job. He agrees to help her in return for a scoop that would help him restart his career. Their plans go awry when they end up falling in love and after a few misunderstandings are resolved, they walk away into the sunset together. Which Hollywood movie does the plot seem to be lifted from?

Answer: It Happened One Night

"It Happened One Night", based on a story by Samuel Hopkins Adams, was directed by Frank Capra and featured Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. It was the first movie to win all the five major Academy Awards which comprise Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay.

The Hindi version, "Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin" (The Heart Refuses to Listen), was a frame by frame copy and starred Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt. The film also had a number of hit songs which helped stretch the length of the movie to two and a half hours, suitable for Bollywood standards.
3. Sanjay suddenly realizes he's in love with his childhood friend Sanjana when she informs him that she's getting married to a doctor she met on a recent holiday. Determined to break this match, he heads back home and tries every trick in the book to get the wedding called off. Name the Hollywood inspiration.

Answer: My Best Friend's Wedding

Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney and Cameron Diaz featured in "My Best Friend's Wedding". Rupert Everett, who had a supporting role as Julia's gay friend, won nominations for Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTA and Golden Globe awards.

The Bollywood remake "Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai" (even the title is a literal translation of the original) starred Uday Chopra, Tulip Joshi and Jimmy Shergill. Since the movie was the home production of lead actor Uday Chopra, the genders of the protagonists were reversed to give him the meatier role. The ending of this film differed from the original with the best friend walking off with the bride.
4. Rhea and Karan first meet on a trip to New York but the encounter ends on a bitter note. Over the years they keep bumping into each other on various occasions even as Rhea gets married and then becomes a young widow. It's only after several years of friendship that they realize they're in love with each other. Which Hollywood movie does this sound familiar to?

Answer: When Harry Met Sally

"When Harry Met Sally" starred Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal and is considered one of the quintessential Hollywood romantic comedies. Meg Ryan later went on to star in a number of other romantic movies, most of them turning out to be fairly successful.

"Hum Tum" (You and Me), featuring Rani Mukherji and Saif Ali Khan, ended up doing quite well at the box office and even picked up a number of awards including the National Award for Best Actor. However, it didn't feature the iconic restaurant scene from the original which would probably have been too bold for Indian sensibilities.
5. Rohit and Kiran are both aspiring singers who fall in love and marry amidst parental opposition. As time passes, Kiran realizes that her ambitions are neglected while she is left to look after the house and bring up their son. Fed up, she one day leaves the house in search of her dream. Rohit suddenly finds himself stuck as a single parent and struggles to cope with the situation. Slowly he forms a strong bond with his son as they both learn to live without Kiran. Months later Kiran, now a successful actress, returns to claim her son and a bitter custody battle ensues. Which Hollywood movie inspired this remake?

Answer: Kramer vs. Kramer

"Kramer vs. Kramer" won 5 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman also won Oscars for their performances in the movie.

The Hindi version was called "Akele Hum Akele Tum" and starred Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala. Both the lead actors put in credible performances and the movie was a commercial success. The plot of the Hindi remake follows the original closely with entire scenes lifted directly from it. Even the publicity posters of "Akele Hum Akele Tum" were exact copies of "Kramer vs. Kramer".
6. Priya is stuck in a loveless marriage with Vikram who mentally and physically abuses her. Unable to take any more of it, she stages her own death and then moves to a new city after assuming a different identity. There she meets and ultimately falls in love with Raj. Despite knowing about her past, Raj agrees to marry her. Unfortunately Vikram realizes that Priya's alive and is determined to get revenge. The movie ends with Priya killing Vikram in self defence. Name the Hollywood romantic thriller that inspired this movie.

Answer: Sleeping with the Enemy

"Sleeping with the Enemy" was based on a novel of the same name by Nancy Price. It featured Julia Roberts, Patrick Bergin and Kevin Anderson. The Hindi version outlined in the question was called "Daraar" and starred Juhi Chawla, Arbaaz Khan and Rishi Kapoor.

This movie seemed to have really caught the fancy of Indian film makers as apart from "Daraar", there were three other remakes of "Sleeping with the Enemy" released at around the same time - "Yaraana", "Agnisakshi" and "Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche". All four were unable to replicate the success of the original film and tanked at the box office.
7. Karan, a playboy, meets Priya on a cruise liner and despite her initial hesitation to befriend him, they soon realize they're in love. However both are already engaged to other people and are hence unable to take their relationship forward. They agree to meet at a particular place after a certain period if they still feel as strongly about each other then. Unfortunately Priya meets with an accident on her way to their rendezvous and has to have both her legs amputated. Unwilling to be a burden to Karan, she doesn't inform him about the accident and he assumes that she had changed her mind about him. Sometime later he sees her at a concert but doesn't realize that she's an invalid. He later goes to her house to give her a piece of jewellery where he finds his own painting hanging in her room. Which classic Hollywood film has this plot been borrowed from?

Answer: An Affair to Remember

"An Affair to Remember" starred Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr and is ranked #5 on AFI's list of the greatest love stories. This movie was itself inspired by an earlier Hollywood film called "Love Affair".

Even though "Mann", the Hindi version starring Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala, hardly deviated from the original in terms of the plot, it was a commercial and critical disaster and sank at the box office. The movie was marred by poor performances with most of the cast hamming outrageously. Apart from the plot, much of the sound track of the movie was also lifted from various sources.
8. Prem is a self professed 'love guru' who helps other guys get together with the women of their dreams. One of his clients is Bhaskar who's in love with his boss, Priya. While helping Bhaskar, Prem is also pursuing Naina, a journalist whom he has fallen for himself. Unfortunately, a guy whom Prem had refused to 'coach' has a one night stand with Naina's friend and then dumps her citing Prem's advice. Prem then has to clear his name and win back Naina. Which date movie 'inspired' this Bollywood hit?

Answer: Hitch

"Hitch" is a romantic comedy starring Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kevin James, and Amber Valletta. Will Smith plays the matchmaker who helps other guys hook up with the women they're in love with.

The movie did well in India prompting an Indian filmmaker, David Dhawan, to remake it as "Partner". "Partner" starred Salman Khan, Lara Dutta, Govinda and Katrina Kaif and was a commercial success despite getting a thumbs down from the critics. The film was touted as a comeback vehicle for Govinda, a former leading actor, and did help to revive his fortunes for a short while.
9. When Raj sees Pooja get knocked down by a train, he rushes her to the hospital. Once there, her family assumes that he's Romi, the guy Pooja had eloped with against their wishes. Raj doesn't correct their mistake and continues to pretend that he's Pooja's fiancé while she's in a coma. While waiting for Pooja to recover, he ends up falling in love with her best friend, Jhanvi. When Pooja does recover, she promptly falls for Raj too, complicating matters further. Name the movie that was the source of this 'inspiration'.

Answer: While You Were Sleeping

This was another remake where the only contribution of the Hindi film script writer was to reverse the genders of the protagonists. "While You Were Sleeping" was a box office success starring Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman and Peter Gallagher. Bullock received a Golden Globe nomination for this performance.

The Hindi version, "Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega" (Every Heart That Loves), starred Salman Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherji and was unnecessarily loud and melodramatic. The members of the huge extended family in this movie were so over the top and caricatured that it's hard to believe Raj continued with the charade because of his desire to be part of the family. Except for minor additions and changes, which only detracted from the original storyline, the plot of the remake mimicked the English version closely.
10. Arun is an unsuccessful television anchor who has an unrequited crush on fellow anchor, Alia. Things start going downhill for Arun when he loses his job at the same time that Alia gravitates towards a new colleague, Rocky. He blames God for the mess in his life who then offers to let him take over the control of the universe for ten days. Arun uses his new found powers to destroy Rocky's career and win over Alia. In the process, he also tries to grant the wishes of everybody creating an even bigger mess. Finally he accepts his mistakes and God gives him another chance to start over afresh. What is the name of the original?

Answer: Bruce Almighty

"Bruce Almighty" was a box office success despite average reviews from the critics. It starred Jim Carrey, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman as "God".

The Hindi remake "God Tussi Great Ho" starred Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Sohail Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Over the top performances and lame attempts at humour ensured that the movie flopped.

The Biblical references from the original, like the parting of the Red Sea, were omitted in the Hindi remake since they would've been lost on a predominantly non Christian audience.
