Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1992 British drama, starring Stephen Rea and Jaye Davidson, stunned unsuspecting viewers with its shocking twist. Rea plays an I.R.A. man hiding out in England who falls for a London hairstylist named Dil. What is the title of this film?

Answer: The Crying Game

If you haven't seen the film I won't give away the surprise. When I first saw the movie I knew what to expect so the impact wasn't as great as it might have been. In the film every character wears a mask, symbolically and, in Dil's case, quite figuratively.
2. Cary Grant stars in this 1959 movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It features a nerve-racking crop dusting scene and culminates in an exciting finale atop Mount Rushmore. Name the film.

Answer: North by Northwest

There are several bloopers in the movie which I never really noticed until they were pointed out. One occurs towards the end of the movie when Vandamm confronts Thornhill in the visitors' center at Mount Rushmore and gun fire is exchanged. Watch closely and you'll notice a young boy in the background covering his ears before the gun goes off.
3. This 1999 film, also based on a true story, stars Richard Farnsworth as an elderly man who travels on a lawn mower to visit his ailing brother in another state. What is the name of this film?

Answer: The Straight Story

Richard Farnsworth plays the role of Alvin Straight so well and so naturally, I nearly forgot this was a dramatization and not a documentary. Alvin's six-week odyssey from his home in Iowa to Wisconsin on a John Deere lawn mower becomes a journey of self-discovery. We, the viewers, also discover a lot about Alvin through conversations and the friendships he develops along the way.
4. This 1988 comedy that stars Melanie Griffith and Harrison Ford may seem dated now but as a Cinderella story, it's timeless. The plot revolves around a somewhat naive secretary who turns the tables on her conniving boss (Sigourney Weaver). Name this delightful comedy.

Answer: Working Girl

If you can get past the big hair of the 1980s you'll enjoy this film. Carly Simon's award-winning song from the movie soundtrack, "Let the River Run," is still one of my favorites. By the way, Cinderella does get her prince in the form of hunky Harrison Ford.
5. James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan star in a wonderfully romantic film about two pen-pals who work together but don't quite get along. Unknowingly they have been pen-pals all along and have secretly fallen in love. What is the name of this romantic comedy?

Answer: The Shop Around the Corner

A remake of this movie,"You've Got Mail," was made in 1998 and stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The original film is set in Hungary and the remake in New York. The original uses the actual mail service, the remake uses e-mail. What a difference 58 years makes!
6. Reese Witherspoon's first film is a coming-of-age drama about two sisters who fall in love with the same boy. Reese plays the role of the younger sister, Dani Trant. Name this film.

Answer: The Man in the Moon

Sam Waterston and Tess Harper co-star as the parents in this well-acted drama that illustrates the importance of family and how the bonds shared between sisters can survive tragic events.
7. Linda Fiorentino stars in a sexy thriller as Bridget Gregory, a seductress out to get what she wants and destroy anyone standing in her way. Bill Pullman stars as her husband and Peter Berg as her lover. What is the title of this film?

Answer: The Last Seduction

Not only does Bridget steal drug money from her husband, she ensnares a new lover to get rid of him. Linda Fiorentino does a great job as the diabolical schemer.
8. One of the funniest and cleverest comedies of the 1980s stars Michael Caine and Steve Martin as con artists plying their trade in a French town on the Riviera. They target rich widows, one in particular. Name this comedy.

Answer: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

In my opinion, Michael Caine and Steve Martin make a great comedic team. Glenn Headley plays the soap heiress who's the con artists' next target. But the soap heiress has a few tricks of her own!
9. In 1983, Mike Nichols directed a chilling movie based on actual events. The movie stars Meryl Streep in the title role with Cher and Kurt Russell as co-stars. Name the one-word title of this film.

Answer: Silkwood

Karen Silkwood, played perfectly by Streep, works for the Oklahoma plutonium-recycling plant, Kerr-McGee. When Karen blows the whistle on the company for unsafe practices, she is contaminated with radiation, then killed. Many agree it is murder although others, including the police, conclude her death is an accident.

This movie is so chilling and as relevant today as it was when it was released, that I still shudder when I watch the shower scene where Karen (Streep) is contaminated with a large dose of radiation and has to be scrubbed down.

Her panic is truly terrifying to watch.
10. Tom Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek star in this Oscar-nominated film about a long-married couple whose marriage is tested after their son is murdered. Marisa Tomei co-stars as the son's lover. Name this film.

Answer: In the Bedroom

The movie is rather bleak but well-acted. The father's desire for revenge is overshadowed by the strains put on his long marriage. Issues dealing with self awareness and the couple's future without their son dominate the film.
