Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rozz Williams was born on November 6th, 1963, under what name?

Answer: Roger Alan Painter

Roger Alan Painter wanted to craft a new name for himself. He helped start the band Christian Death when he was just 16, and decided to take the name Rozz Williams. He took the name from a grave found in a cemetery in Pomona, California, where he was raised.
2. Rozz grew up in a very strict religious household. What was he raised as?

Answer: Southern Baptist

He and his three siblings were raised as Southern Baptists, which stuck with Rozz for his whole life. During his rise to fame he developed an anti-religious view. He once said that fans would approach him and thank him for bringing them away from religion.
3. According to a post on Eva O's official website, she stated that in 1994, Rozz told her what?

Answer: He has accepted Jesus

Rozz grew up in a very strict religious family. Although he was involved in atheism/anti-theism for most of his life, Eva often talked about Christianity. This had a profound impact on Rozz, and he told her that he had accepted Jesus. Shortly before his death, he called his mother one last time to tell her that he "accepted the Lord". Eva went on to say that Rozz had a very close relationship with God.
4. As time went on and Christian Death became more notable, Rozz clashed with band mate Valor Kand. After a legal dispute, what happened?

Answer: Rozz left Christian Death

Rozz, despite the fact that he started the band, did not have the rights to the name. After Rozz left, he persuaded Valor to change the band name to Sin and Sacrifice. Valor complied, but changed it to The Sin and Sacrifice of Christian Death. Shortly thereafter, Valor changed the name back to Christian Death, much to Rozz's chagrin. Kand and Eva still perform with Christian Death, although some fans feel that Christian Death was Rozz's band, and that Kand was in the wrong during his dispute with Rozz.
5. Rozz and Eva O formed the band Shadow Project. What was the name of their keyboard player?

Answer: Paris Sadonis

Paris stated in an interview that he played "keyboards and sampler". While being a member of Shadow Project, he also contributed to Rozz's solo albums. In 2011, Paris formed a small project called Foxfairy and has remained Los Angeles-based. He is also an avid painter.
6. Rozz was known for his interests in taboo subjects. What serial killer did he become fascinated with?

Answer: Jeffery Dahmer

Rozz became fascinated with Jeffrey Dahmer, as well as Charles Manson. Rozz was intrigued by the iconography used by the Nazis during World War II, and used the swastika in some of his works. This led to the rumor that he was a neo-Nazi. In reality, he used the symbol to make people aware of the hypocrisy of organizations, individuals, and governments that put on an innocent and cheerful facade.
7. Shadow Project was named after a study of casualties after what tragic event in World War II?

Answer: The atomic bombing of Hiroshima

The Shadow Project in World War II looked into the effects of the nuclear bombs, particularly the one dropped on Hiroshima on April 6th, 1945. The study was focused on the casualties as well, and how the radiation played a role in the city in the years to follow. Rozz was very interested in history and was fascinated by the theory that "history will repeat itself".
8. Nico B, an underground film director and Rozz's friend, had Rozz star in a very short film in 1998. What was the film's title?

Answer: Pig

"Pig" was a short, experimental, silent, black and white horror film. It is perhaps Nico B's best known work, followed by "1334" in 2012. The film was made shortly before Rozz's death.
9. Which of theses artists did Rozz not cite as an influence?

Answer: KISS

A transcript of a phone interview published on vamp.org, as well as a Shadow Project interview in 1992, reveals that David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and the New York Dolls were only a few of Rozz's many influences. Eva O said that the "Shadow Project sound" was their own, and although they all took influence from many artists, they tried not to recreate their respective sounds exactly.
10. Three of Rozz's albums were released posthumously. "Live in Berlin", released in 2002, was the first live album he recorded. "Accept the Gift of Sin", another live album, was released in 2003. The final album was released in 2013. What was its title?

Answer: Sleeping Dogs

"Sleeping Dogs" is considered one of Rozz's best albums. It contains a cover of David Bowie's "Time", and a rock version of Rozz's own hit song "Flowers", which is often said to be his best work.
11. What number did Rozz include in most of his works?

Answer: 1334

Rozz was fascinated by the Black Death, and stated that 1334 was the year it was at its peak, although this was not the case. He also stated that history repeats itself. The number can be found on his album "Every King a Bastard Son", and on some of his autographed items. Director and friend Nico B, in 2012, made a short film titled "1334" that depicted Rozz's death.
12. Apart from making music, Rozz was also an avid what?

Answer: Painter

Rozz's works are difficult to track down, as most are either owned or have been lost. Some of his original paintings are on display at the LA Museum of Death in the Suicide Hall exhibit. Others are owned by private collectors. In 2013, a tribute to Rozz in Los Angeles was graced with some of his paintings, brought in by the aforementioned private collectors.
13. Rozz Williams committed suicide by hanging.

Answer: True

Rozz Williams hanged himself on April 1st, 1998. His body was discovered by his friend and roommate Ryan Gaumer (stage name Ryan Wildstar), although no suicide note was found. On a table, Rozz left a bottle of wine, a match, two cigarettes, and eight tarot cards, one titled "The Hangman is a Fool".

The LA Museum of Death's "Suicide Hall" exhibit has some of Rozz's original paintings, a stage outfit, his crown of thorns, some stage props, and the cabinet he hanged himself from.
14. Many of Rozz's friends and associates gave interviews following his death, giving their theories as to what caused him to take his own life. What was not one of the proposed reasons?

Answer: His albums wouldn't sell

Former Christian Death band mate Valor Kand stated that heartbreak and alcohol played a role in his death. Erik Christides, a friend of Rozz and boyfriend of Ryan Gaumer, died of an overdose shortly before Rozz's suicide. This is believed to be a factor as well.

It was also well known that Rozz battled addictions to alcohol and heroin for most of his life. Valor Kand also stated that Rozz struggled with androgyny and bisexuality. However, since no suicide note was left, we can never know why Rozz took his own life.
15. Some were shocked by Rozz's suicide, while others weren't. Valor Kand told the press that Rozz was what?

Answer: A manic depressive

After his death, Kand told Rolling Stone Magazine, "He was a manic depressive. There have been more times than I could count that I have yanked razor blades from his hands and ropes from around his neck, and stopped him from killing other people with knives. I think this was the way he wanted to go, it was his destiny."

Bruce Duff worked with Rozz previously, and also gave a statement to Rolling Stone; "I saw the guy ten days before he died and he was laughing and having a great time. Obviously there was something wrong. Rozz had a tendency to not think his actions all of the way through."
