Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After several flop records for Decca, Bobby Darin moved to Atlantic and had his first hit record on their ATCO label. What was the song?

Answer: Splish Splash

The writing credits for "Splish Splash" are shared by Bobby and Jean Murray. Fellow songwriter Jean (mother of famed New York DJ "Murray the K)" had a title "splish splash, take a bath" but didn't know where to go with it. Bobby dashed off the song in a hour or so and his career was off and running.
2. In July 1958 Bobby's second hit record, "Early In the Morning", entered the Billboard Charts. It was not, however, credited to Bobby. What name was on the label?

Answer: The Rinky-Dinks

The song was written by Bobby and Woody Harris. A problem arose between ATCO and Brunswick Records regarding Bobby's contract; ATCO ended up releasing the record using "The Rinky-Dinks" name. The Buddy Holly version of this song entered the charts one week after Bobby's. They cancelled each other out and neither version cracked the Top 20.
3. Bobby's "signature song" was "Mack the Knife." In 1959 it was a monster hit and spent NINE weeks at the top of the Billboard record charts. What play did this song come from?

Answer: The Three Penny Opera

The song was written in 1928 by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht and is about a murderer, Macheath. There were several hit recordings of this song but only Bobby reached Number One. It won the Grammy as "Record of the Year" for 1959.
4. In 1961 Bobby Darin had a (minor) hit covering one of Nat King Cole's biggest hits. What was that unusual song?

Answer: Nature Boy

Nat's version of "Nature Boy" held the Billboard Number One spot for eight weeks in 1948. Bobby's version only made it to number 40. It was written by a fellow named eden ahbez who followed a philosophy that adhered to a fruit and vegetable diet, wore long hair, and held a back-to-nature philosophy; these folks were known as "Nature Boys." Composer ahbez considered this song semi-autobiographical. Nat and Bobby were not "nature boys."
5. Bobby Darin and his wife, Sandra Dee, appeared in three movies together. What was their first one?

Answer: Come September

The 1961 comedy film "Come September" starred Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida. Sandra was already an established film star. It was Bobby's first real movie acting job... though he went on to bigger things.
6. In 1962 Bobby appeared in a film with Sidney Poitier and was nominated in 1963 for a "Golden Globe" award as "Best Actor - Drama." What was the name of the film?

Answer: Pressure Point

In this film prison psychiatrist Sidney Poitier is recalling a time when he handled the case of an American Nazi convict... played by Bobby Darin. Peter Falk also appeared in the film. The following year Bobby appeared in "Captain Newman, M.D." for which he received an Academy Award nomination for "Best Actor in a Supporting Role."
7. In 1973 Bobby has his own music/comedy television series on NBC. What was the name of the series?

Answer: The Bobby Darin Show

Many outstanding performers of the day appeared including Dusty Springfield, Flip Wilson, Petula Clark, Bread, Nancy Sinatra, Burl Ives, etc. Bobby would often sing duets with his "guests" and Bobby's flair for comedy was often used in skits. The show ran for 13 weeks.
8. Not only a singer and actor, Bobby Darin was also a talented song writer. Which of these folk-rock songs, popularized by Tim Hardin, was a Bobby Darin composition?

Answer: Simple Song of Freedom

Bobby wrote several of his biggest hits including "Splish Splash", "Dream Lover" and "18 Yellow Roses". He also wrote the music for several of his films.
9. Bobby recorded many great records in his short life, including the monster hit "Mack the Knife." How many of his records reached the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart?

Answer: one

Bobby had ten "Top Ten" hits including "Splish Splash", "Dream Lover", "Beyond the Sea", and "18 Yellow Roses". "Mack the Knife" was his only song that reached the top.
10. Bobby Darin is pictured on the cover of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" LP.

Answer: false

Two of the Beatles' (and Bobby's) contemporary singers included on the cover are Bob Dylan and Dion. Before The Beatles led the British Invasion in early '64 Bobby had 19 Billboard "Top 40" hits; he had two after their arrival. Bobby was inducted into "The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" in 1990.
