Fatboy Slim, Funk Soul Brother Quiz

In 1998, Fatboy Slim released the album 'You've Come a Long Way, Baby'. I've already written a quiz on his former band, the Housemartins, so I thought I should do one for him too.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Norman Cook is the man behind Fatboy Slim, but what is his real name?

Answer: Quentin

Norman Cook's real name is actually Quentin Cook. He DJ'ed as 'DJ Quentox' while a student at Brighton Polytechnic, and adopted the pseudonym of Fatboy Slim in 1996. He said in a 2001 interview with NPR that it 'doesn't mean anything', that he had lied about the name so many different times that he couldn't even remember the real reason for choosing it, and that it was an oxymoron.
2. What is the name of Fatboy Slim's debut album?

Answer: Better Living Through Chemistry

'You've Come a Long Way, Baby' is probably Fatboy Slim's best-known album, but it's not his first! 'Better Living Through Chemistry' came out two years earlier, in 1996. The first single from the album, 'Everybody Needs a 303', was featured on the 'Lost in Space' soundtrack. ('303' refers to the TB-303 synthesiser.) It was remixed as 'Everybody Loves a Carnival' and subsequently reached Number 34 on the UK singles chart.
3. 'The Rockafeller Skank', from which this quiz gets its title, was the first single from 'You've Come a Long Way, Baby' and was a regular Radio 1 staple in 1998. It also contains several samples. Because of this, what percentage of royalties did Fatboy Slim receive for the track?

Answer: 0%

In a 2006 interview with dance music blog Higher Frequency, Cook stated that he had to divide the royalties in such a manner that all the artists sampled on the song would be paid. As there were four different artists sampled, they got 25% each of the royalties, leaving him with none.

The artists sampled include the Bobby Fuller Four, the Art of Noise, Just Brothers and the John Barry Orchestra. The repeated line throughout the song is a sample of rapper Lord Finesse guesting on Vinyl Dogs' 'Vinyl Dog Vibe'.
4. On which Brighton-based independent label was 'You've Come a Long Way, Baby' released?

Answer: Skint

Skint was founded by Damian Harris, aka Midfield General. It was an offshoot of Loaded Records, which was founded by Skint's co-owners, Tim Jeffery and JC Reid. As well as Fatboy Slim, Skint was also home to the Lo Fidelity Allstars and REQ, and mainly focused on a type of dance music known as 'big beat', which was influenced by acid house and used breakbeats and loops.

The label sponsored Brighton & Hove Albion FC for several years. Skint was bought by BMG Rights Management in 2014.
5. Which director, also responsible for the Breeders 'Cannonball', directed the video for 'Praise You'?

Answer: Spike Jonze

Spike Jonze started out shooting street skateboarding films, and has also made music videos for Björk, Elastica, the Beastie Boys, Luscious Jackson, and many other musicians. His film credits include 'Where the Wild Things Are' and 'Being John Malkovich'.

He appears in the video under the name of Richard Koufey. The video was filmed outside a movie theatre, without a licence, and won three awards at the MTV Music Video Awards in 1999. Jonze was a fan of Fatboy Slim and made his own video for 'The Rockafeller Skank', and Cook was so impressed with Jonze's dancing in the video that he allowed him to direct the video for 'Praise You'. Cook himself appears in the video as an onlooker.
6. Which of these facts about 'Right Here, Right Now' is NOT true?

Answer: It reached Number 1 on the UK singles chart.

'Right Here, Right Now' peaked at Number 2; it was beaten to the top spot by Irish boy band Westlife and 'Swear It Again'.

The video for the song features a eukaryote evolving into various sea creatures, before coming onto land and evolving into a primate (which, as biologists will tell you, is not quite how evolution happened), ending up as the fat man from the cover of 'You've Come a Long Way, Baby'. British producer ATFC and OnePhatDeeva released 'In and Out of My Life' in 1999, which layered Adeva's vocals from the 1988 track of the same name on top of 'Right Here, Right Now'. Manchester City adopted 'Right Here, Right Now' as their entrance music in the early '00s.
7. Which husky-voiced singer appears on 'Demons' and 'Love Life' on 'Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars'?

Answer: Macy Gray

Macy Gray's breakout single, 'I Try', was released in the UK in 1999. She gained attention for her raspy voice. She has also collaborated with Ariana Grande, John Frusciante (formerly of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and Erykah Badu. Born Natalie McIntyre, she got the idea for her stage name from a mailbox, and went to the same school as a ginger teenager called Brian Warner, who would later grow up to become Marilyn Manson (although neither of them knew each other then). 'Demons' was released a single, and also samples Bill Withers' 'I Can't Write Left-Handed'.
8. Which actor starred in the video for 'Weapon of Choice'? (He was dancing in it, as opposed to hunting deer.)

Answer: Christopher Walken

Christopher Walken was awarded Best Supporting Actor for 'The Deer Hunter' in 1978. The video for 'Weapon of Choice' features him dancing in a hotel lobby, and was also directed by Spike Jonze. Walken originally trained as a dancer, and said that the style of music suited him because it had a strong beat, which was good for tap dancing.

As a fan of Spike Jonze, he also jumped at the opportunity to work with him. The video won six awards at the MTV Music Video Awards in 2001.
9. On which single from 'Palookaville' did Norman Cook play bass guitar?

Answer: Slash Dot Dash

Cook harked back to his time in the Housemartins as their bass player. 'Slash Dot Dash' was the first single to be released from 'Palookaville', and peaked at Number 12 on the UK singles chart in 2004. The original track, only available on a US advance copy of the album, used a different sample to the one released as a single, possibly due to sample clearance issues. ('Push and Shove' was not released as a single.)

Cook's local team, Brighton & Hove Albion, temporarily named their ground, the Withdean Stadium, 'Palookaville' while they were being sponsored by Skint.
10. 'Palookaville' features two cover versions. One is 'Jin-go-lo-ba' by the Nigerian percussionist Babatunde Olatunji. The other one features Bootsy Collins and mentions a 'pompatus of love', and was released as a single in 2005. What song is this?

Answer: 'The Joker' by the Steve Miller Band

'The Joker' was originally released by the Steve Miller Band in 1973, and re-released in the UK in 1990, when it featured in an ad for Levi's. It topped the US Billboard charts the first time around, and the UK singles chart the second time around. kd lang released a cover in 1994, and Fatboy Slim's version came out 11 years later. Bootsy Collins sang the lead vocals, and it reached Number 32 on the UK singles chart. And no, I have no idea what a pompatus is.
