Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How is this for a pick-up line? "Girl, you really got me going" Which song is it from?

Answer: You Really Got Me

This was their first number one hit in the UK, and it was their third single. According to Ray Davies, just before the fabulous guitar solo played by brother Dave, you can hear the latter telling Ray to...well...beat it (Only his choice of words were a bit on the harsher side)
2. "'Cause he gets up in the morning, and he goes to work at nine" Who can this be?

Answer: A Well-Respected Man

The single hit UK #13 in February 1966. There's a great line in the song where Ray goes "...he goes the the regatta....cause he's dying to get at her" What a rhyme!
3. Here's a little tale of the forbidden: "I met her in a club down in old Soho" Which song is it?

Answer: Lola

Lola, is it about a transvestite or isn't it? The line at the end of the song goes: "I'm glad I'm a man, and so is Lola" Does this mean that Lola is glad I'm a man, or that Lola is also a man? "Lola" was a UK #2 hit and stayed 14 weeks on the charts. On the single version Ray sings "Cherry Cola" and not "Coca Cola".

The BBC wouldn't play any songs that could be an advertisment for a product, so Ray flew from New York to London just to change the lyrics.
4. After a jangling piano intro you hear the words: "My make-up is dry and it cracks on my chin"

Answer: Death Of A Clown

"I'm drowning my sorrows in whiskey and gin" I know you sang along! Written by brother Dave and Ray together, it was released as a solo-single in 1967 from Dave Davies. It shot up the charts to #3.
5. "They seek him here, they seek him there" Now, who could they be looking for?

Answer: Dedicated Follower Of Fashion

This song made UK #4 in april of 1966. Ray based this character on Dave, as he was the hipster among them, always wearing the latest fads, or even next week's sometimes.
6. Someone's in a bit of a jam. "The taxman's taken all my dough". Which song begins thus?

Answer: Sunny Afternoon

Ray wrote this summer smash hit in 1966. And the week England won the Soccer World Cup it was number one in the English charts. It actually deposed the Beatles' "Paperback Writer" from the top spot.
7. A nostalgic song, but which one is it? "Long ago life was clean, sex was bad and obscene"

Answer: Victoria

"Victoria was my Queen"; these are the lyrics given in the album liner, although some recordings of the song sound as though they're singing "... sex was bad, called obscene." This song is from the Kinks first real concept album; "Arthur, Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire".

Although this was recorded and conceived before the Who's "Tommy", but was released after "Tommy", the latter got the notion of being the first rock-opera.
8. "Now that you've found your paradise, this is your kingdom to command" Which song is this the opening line to?

Answer: Shangri-La

Shangri-La is one of those songs that really should have been a hit. It is also from the "Arthur" album. This is Ray's ultimate song about the little man. Shangri-La means a place of bliss and delight, a small paradise.
9. "I'm not content to be with you in the daytime" There you have it straight from the horse's mouth. Which song is this?

Answer: All Day And All Of The Night

"All Day And All Of The Night" was an even rockier tune than "You Really Got Me". It was the follow-up single to "You Really Got Me" and reached UK #2.
10. Let's round this up with one that we all remember. Or do we? "Dirty old river must you keep rolling"

Answer: Waterloo Sunset

Ray wrote this lovely tune while in hospital near Waterloo in London in 1967. It was a UK #2 hit, and was actually about the Liverpool (or Merseyside) Sunset, but Ray thought that since so much had been written about Liverpool he made it into a song about London. And there you have, good friends! Please rate this quiz if you enjoyed it. I know I did making it! Cheers
