Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna presented the Video Vanguard Award to which singer?

Answer: George Michael

At this VMA show, Madonna also performed "Express Yourself". George was a huge pop star at the time, thanks to the success of the singles and videos from his "Faith" album. At the start of his acceptance speech, George thanked Dana Carvey for impersonating him on "Saturday Night Live".
2. Which of the following hits by Madonna didn't make it to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart?

Answer: Material Girl

Even though it's one of Madonna's more iconic songs, "Material Girl" just missed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1985, peaking at number two. In May of that same year, "Crazy For You" replaced the famous USA For Africa anthem "We Are the World" at number one. "Live to Tell" went to number one in 1986, as did "This Used to Be My Playground" in 1992.

These three songs were from movies. "Crazy for You" was from "Vision Quest" in which Madonna had a cameo, playing a bar singer. "Live To Tell" was from "At Close Range", which starred Madonna's ex-husband and two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn. "This Used to Be My Playground" was played during the closing credits of "A League of Their Own", in which Madonna also starred in.
3. In a 1994 "USA Today" interview about her opinions on NBA Basketball, what NBA team did Madonna admit was her favorite?

Answer: New York Knicks

Back in the mid-90s, Madonna regularly attended Knicks games at Madison Square Garden. Filmmakers Spike Lee and Woody Allen are also avid Knicks fan.
4. In her tribute speech to Michael Jackson at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna said she treated Michael to a restaurant where they both had wine, dessert, and what famous food?

Answer: French Fries

This happened in 1991. It was the same year the two pop icons also attended the Academy Awards together.
5. Madonna has done several interviews on MTV. Which of the following former MTV on-air personalities never conducted an interview with the Material Girl?

Answer: Bill Bellamy

Kurt Loder interviewed Madonna several times for MTV Madonna specials. John Norris interviewed the pop music queen in 1996 for the network's "Evita" special. Carson Daly chatted with Maddie when she was a guest on "TRL" in 2000. Bill Bellamy hung out with and interviewed Michael and Janet Jackson, R&B, rap, and hip-hop acts, but never interviewed Madonna.
6. The concept of the "Material Girl" music video was inspired by a scene from which classic Marilyn Monroe film?

Answer: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

In the scene, Marilyn sings "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend". Madonna was once a big Marilyn Monroe fan.
7. As a musical guest on "Saturday Night Live" in 1993, which two songs did Madonna perform?

Answer: "Fever" & "Bad Girl"

Madonna has been on "SNL" numerous times. She hosted it in 1985, appeared in the "Coffee Talk" skit in 1992, and acted in a skit with Lady Gaga in 2009.
8. How many stars did the famous movie critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert give "Madonna: Truth or Dare"?

Answer: 3 and a Half (Very Good)

Both Siskel, in his "Chicago Tribune" review, and Ebert, in his "Chicago Sun-Times" review, gave the documentary this rating. Siskel praised "Truth or Dare" for its candor. Like "Michael Jackson's This Is It" in 2009, "Madonna: Truth or Dare" was a must-see film in 1991 due to Madonna's enormous popularity at the time.
9. Madonna did the "Running Man" dance move during the stage performance of which song?

Answer: Express Yourself

The "Running Man" was made popular by Bobby Brown in the late '80s. Madonna first did this move during the performance of "Express Yourself" at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, wowing the crowd. As a guest on "The Arsenio Hall Show" the following year, Arsenio praised Madonna for doing the move and called her "a great dancer".
10. Which Madonna song is also the name of an Australian boy band?

Answer: Human Nature

Human Nature is somewhat unknown to American pop music fans, but they're very popular in Australia. They were the opening act on Michael Jackson's HIStory tour in 1997. Their big hit is a song called "He Don't Love You" and the video version is available on YouTube.

They also recorded a cover version of The Bangles "Eternal Flame". Human Nature received worldwide exposure in 2000 when they performed an acapella version of the Australian National Anthem at the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Summer Games in Sydney.
