Robby Krieger, reports Rolling Stone magazine, was the primary author of the song, but additional lyrics were added by frontman Jim Morrison and musical arrangements by the rest of the band, so the entire band is credited with authorship of the song. Kreiger would go on to co-write other Doors hits, including "Love Me Two Times" and "Love Her Madly."

José Feliciano's cover appeared on his self-titled album "Feliciano!" and the single of "Light My Fire" was released with a cover of "California Dreaming" on the B-Side. The popularity of his cover caused the Doors version of the song to re-enter the charts. Feliciano's version hit number one on the singles charts in Canada and Australia, where it was a bigger hit even than the Doors' version.

Marc Meyers, in his 2016 book "Anatomy of a Song," writes that in addition to being influenced by the Rolling Stones' lyrics, Krieger was inspired by the melody of "Hey Joe," a 1960s rock standard of contested authorship. The Stones' song, released in 1965, contains the chorus: "So don't play with me, 'cause you're playing with fire."

There was concern that the lyric was a reference to drugs, and so they were asked to change it to "Girl, we couldn't get much better." The band agreed, but during the actual performance, Jim Morrison famously sung the original lyric. The band was then told they would never perform on the show again.
