Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the tender age of 19, Kate had her first UK hit, written with material from a famous novel. What was the song title?

Answer: Wuthering Heights

At the age of 15, Kate was writing and recording songs that were far beyond her years on the family home organ. 'Wuthering Heights' was written using material from Emily Bronte's novel. Kate hadn't read it at the time, she just skipped through it finding the verses she needed. She often used any reading material to find lyrics, including newspapers.
2. Which song from Kate's debut album contained these lyrics? 'I hear him before I go to sleep, and focus on the day that's been.'

Answer: The Man With The Child In His Eyes

Kate was taken under the wing of Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) at the age of 16, and was signed by EMI thanks to a professional demo tape Gilmour produced. The 'Kick Inside' album released the following year and went to number 3 on the UK charts.
3. Kate's patriotic second album wasn't nearly as successful as the 'Kick Inside'. What was it titled?

Answer: Lionheart

Although some very good songs came from 'Lionheart', there was only one chart success, 'Hammer Horror.' The song 'Wow' is extremely good and demonstrates Kate's amazing octave range.
4. 'She sent him scented letters and he received them with a strange delight, just like, his wife, and how she was before the years flew by, and how she was before the tears. She signed the letters all yours..' Who signed the letters?

Answer: Babooshka

'Babooshka,' a UK top 5 hit from the 1980 album 'Never For Ever' was Kate's first Top 5 song since Wuthering Heights.
5. Kate's fifth album, 'Hounds Of Love', had her charting in the US for the first time. It featured some spectacular music videos. Which song video featured Donald Sutherland?

Answer: Cloudbusting

This was the first album that Kate produced entirely on her own. The sound of this album was changed significantly for the US release.
6. This intimate and somewhat feminist song from Kate's 1989 album 'Sensual World' was covered by R and B singer Maxwell in 2002.

Answer: This Woman's Work

Any Pink Floyd fans should listen to a song from this album, 'Love And Anger'. Dave Gilmour, Kate's mentor in many capacities, provides some chilling guitar riffs that are very distinctivly 'Gilmour's.'
7. Kate's 1993 album had this title.

Answer: The Red Shoes

This album featured many fine performers including Prince, Eric Clapton, and Gary Brooker.
8. Who is Kate telling not to give up?

Answer: Peter Gabriel

'Don't Give Up' was a duet that Kate performed live and recorded with long-time friend and British performer Peter Gabriel. 'Don't Give Up' can be found on Gabriel's album 'So', which also features the hit song 'Sledgehammer'.
9. Many talented artists performed songs on a tribute album for Elton John and Bernie Taupin called 'Two Rooms'. Which song did Kate perform?

Answer: Rocket Man

This album is a fine tribute to two of the greatest song-smiths of all time. It features Kate Bush, Sting, Wilson and Phillips, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, The Who, Bon Jovi, and many more.
10. Legend has it that there are two lost tapes, ironically called the 'lost songs'. They allegedly feature a very raw Kate Bush at the age of 15. Do these tapes exist?

Answer: Yes

Kate recorded two tapes (with about 20 songs on each) on the family's little cassette recorder. The tape was placed on top of the piano, so you can imagine the average sound quality. She sent the tapes to several record companies, but nothing transpired. Years later these songs were found in Germany and cut to an album, but EMI was quick to squash the release. An American radio DJ some years later got hold of one of the tapes and played it on air, the first public hearing so to speak. I have managed to find several of the 'lost songs', and while extremely raw and screechy, it's quite easy to hear that they were the origins of some of her early releases.
