Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Raconteurs consist of Jack White, Jack Lawrence, Brendan Benson and Patrick Keeler. Which band was White a member of between 1997 and 2011?

Answer: The White Stripes

Jack and Meg White were the White Stripes and although they started the rumour that they were brother and sister, they were actually a married couple until 2000, when they divorced, but continued to make great music together. Jack's real name is Joe Gillis, and he took Meg's name when they married instead of the conventional practice of the bride taking the groom's name.
2. Under which name are The Raconteurs known in Australia?

Answer: The Saboteurs

The name change arose after an Australian jazz band, from Queensland, called The Raconteurs refused to give up their name, even when offered a cash settlement to do so. Rather than cause confusion, The Raconteurs decided, "in the spirit of espionage and subversion", to rename themselves The Saboteurs in Australia only.
3. Jack White and Jack Lawrence from The Raconteurs teamed up with Alison Mosshart of The Kills and Dean Fertita from Queens of the Stone Age to form which band in 2009?

Answer: The Dead Weather

The Dead Weather are the other band of White and Lawrence, and while they haven't had as much success as The Raconteurs, they have still managed three top ten albums on the Billboard 200 in USA as well as a top 20 single on the Billboard alternative chart with "Die by the Drop" (2010).
Fertita has also appeared with The Raconteurs, playing keyboards at live shows on their 2006 and 2011 tours.
4. The first single from The Raconteurs was a top five hit in Canada, UK and Denmark. What was it called?

Answer: Steady As She Goes

All are Jack White tracks, but only "Steady As She Goes" from 2006 was a Raconteurs track. Of the others, "Treat Me Like Your Mother" (2009) was by The Dead Weather, "Sixteen Saltines" (2012) was a Jack White solo track and "Icky Thump" was by the White Stripes, from their 2007 album of the same name.
5. Although The Raconteurs didn't form until 2005, their reputation was enough for them to get an eight date gig in 2006, opening for which megastar on his "Never Ending Tour" which started in 1998?

Answer: Bob Dylan

The band played on the north-eastern leg of the USA section of Dylan's tour, in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Pennsylvania in November 2006.
They played a set list of just ten songs, including their often performed live cover of Cher's 1966 track, "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)".
6. The Raconteurs may be an American band, but in which city did they play their first ever live gig in 2006?

Answer: Liverpool, UK

The band's first gig was at the Carling Academy in Liverpool on March 20th 2006.
They played all of the tracks from their soon to be released debut album along with covers of "A House Is Not a Motel", originally by Love in 1967 and the track "Five on the Five", an original number that wouldn't be released until the band's second album in 2008.
As an encore, they played a cover of the Flamin' Groovies 1970 hit, "Headin' for the Texas Border".
7. What was the title of the first album from The Raconteurs, released in 2006?

Answer: Broken Boy Soldiers

The expectations for any album featuring Jack White were always going to be high and this album divided opinion, depending on whether you saw it as a Raconteurs album or a White Stripes/Jack White side project album.
The review in "Rolling Stone" stated, "Expectations were sky-high, but the Raconteurs exceed them all", while Allmusic website declared that the album, "proves that the Raconteurs are nothing less than a first-rate power pop band".
On the other hand, Billboard said, "as far as side projects go, this is as good as it gets" while "NME" reviewed it as "psychedelic pop-rock that was popular between 1965 and 1968".
8. Which award, surprising for an alt-rock band, were The Raconteurs nominated for in 2009?

Answer: Country Music Association (CMA) Award

The Raconteurs were nominated for the CMA for Musical Event of the Year, for the track, "Old Enough", which was remixed and featured country stars Ricky Scaggs and Ashley Monroe.
The voices of Benson and Monroe work so well together, as do those of White and Scaggs, who also manage to combine guitar and mandolin to great effect.
Ultimately, the track lost out on winning a CMA to "Start a Band" by Brad Paisley featuring Keith Urban, although if it had won, it would have been the second consecutive year that a rock artist had won a CMA, as Robert Palnt and Alison Krauss won in 2008 for "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)".
9. On their 2019 album, "Help Us Stranger" The Raconteurs included a cover of "Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)", originally recorded by which artist as a follow up to his 1965 EP, "The Universal Soldier"?

Answer: Donovan

Donovan's original song was written for and dedicated to his friend "Gypsy" Dave Mills, and The Raconteurs sped the song up, and introduced a rockier beat to the track.
Donovan released the track as a B side to his UK single release, "Turquoise" (1965), which was itself later a B side on the USA release of "To Try for the Sun" in 1966.
10. In 2006, The Raconteurs headlined a tribute night to the late John Peel at the Electric Ballroom in London. They closed the show with a cover of Peel's all time favourite song. Which track, originally by The Undertones in 1978 was this?

Answer: Teenage Kicks

The Electric Proms, as the show was called featured Peel's favourite bands and favourite songs from his long career in broadcasting, and during his time on the airwaves, he regularly enthused about The White Stripes, but as they were no longer performing, White was happy to play with The Raconteurs.
Other bands on the bill included The Zutons, The Horrors, Friends of the Bride and Jet.
Peel often admitted that "Teenage Kicks" was one of the few songs that had the ability to move him to tears, and his gravestone is inscribed with the lyric, "Teenage dreams so hard to beat" from the song.
