quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tommy's father, Captain Walker, is missing in action. Several other people went missing with him. Who are these people?

Answer: A number of men

The lyrics are:

"Believe him missing
With a number of men
Don't expect
To see him again."
2. At the end of "1921", who is having a good year (it's in the last verse)?

Answer: The father and mother

In this song, Tommy's father (who is NOT dead) returns home to find his wife has been unfaithful. He kills the wife's lover, but Tommy sees this. Tommy's father and mother tell Tommy that none of this happened, traumatizing him so much he goes deaf, dumb and blind.
3. In "Amazing Journey/Sparks" Tommy sees a stranger dressed in a silver gown with a long beard. How long is this man's beard?

Answer: Nearly down to the ground

It is unclear who exactly this man is supposed to be. Some claim it is God, others say it is just Tommy's subconscious manifesting itself in human form, urging his musical dreams onward. What do you think?
4. "Eyesight to the Blind (The Hawker)" follows the Hawker as he brags about the Acid Queen's healing powers. Which of the Queen's healing powers does he brag about first?

Answer: Bringing eyesight to the blind

The Acid Queen's mastery of drugs is not mentioned in this song at all. The only things the Hawker tells of are things Tommy would need. For those curious, "When she starts to lovin' " she brings eyesight, "When she starts to shakin' " she brings speech and at "A word from her lips" the deaf will hear.

Nope, no drugs in the song directly . . . if the Hawker actually said the Acid Queen's name (he refers to her as his woman), there might be an arguable case, however.
5. "The Acid Queen" features the title character telling how she'll bring Tommy back to awareness. She refers to herself by name once, saying, "I'm the Gypsy - the Acid Queen", but what else does she refer to herself as?

Answer: This girl

"If your child ain't all he should be now
This girl could put him right."

The Acid Queen speaks these lines. She also calls herself the Gypsy Queen once.
6. "Pinball Wizard" praises Tommy's pinball talents. What remark does the local lad (narrator of the song) make about Tommy's wrist?

Answer: It's supple

The local lad was once the town's pinball champion---until Tommy came in and pretty much destroyed him. The local lad now praises the new boy's talents and "handed my pinball crown to him." The movie sequence is probably the most well-known from the whole movie.
7. "Go to the Mirror" features a person wondering what Tommy is feeling. Has he ever heard a word they've said? Later this person retaliates by smashing Tommy's mirror ("Smash the Mirror"). Who is this person?

Answer: Tommy's mother

Tommy's mother and father take him to the doctor, who explains that it's a psychological problem their son is having. Tommy's mother begins fretting---what does he know? Does he hear anything I tell him? She tries talking to him, but Tommy just stares into his mirror . . . so his mother goes crazy and smashes it. This cures him.
8. Sally Simpson, the title character of "Sally Simpson" just wants to go to the meeting and see Tommy now that he's cured. However, her father says no and keeps washing his Rolls-Royce. What color is the Rolls-Royce?

Answer: Blue

"Outside the house Mr. Simpson announced
that Sally couldn't go to the meeting.
He went on cleaning his blue Rolls Royce
and she ran inside weeping."

This prompts her to "sneak out anyway" and get injured at the meeting after she is thrown off the stage.
9. Again, in "Sally Simpson" Sally gets thrown off the stage by a uniformed man. What does she do that prompts this?

Answer: She touches Tommy's face

She has to get sixteen stitches and is carried off the stage by ambulance men. Presumably when she gets home, her father simply says "Don't say I didn't warn you!" After this, Sally moves to California and marries a rock musician, but keeps her scar to remind her of Tommy.
10. Complete this line of the lyrics from "We're Not Gonna Take It". We're not gonna take it Gonna break it, gonna ___ it,

Answer: Shake

This is the crowd at Tommy's Holiday Camp refusing his message. They chant "We're not gonna take it", "We don't want no religion", etc. Tommy is unfazed, however.
