Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who has been the only constant member of UFO since their formation in 1969?

Answer: Phil Mogg

Mogg formed the nucleus of the band in London when he was 21 years old. They were originally called Hocus Pocus and changed to UFO in 1969. In 2018, Mogg announced that the 2019 tour celebrating 50 years of UFO would be his retirement tour.
2. Taken from their 1970 debut album, which Eddie Cochran track provided the band with a hit in Japan?

Answer: C'mon Everybody

"C'mon Everybody" was the fourth single released from the "UFO 1" album. Like the previous three, it failed to chart in UK or USA but the Japanese rock fans took it to their hearts and the Japanese version of the record, complete with lyric sheet and picture booklet, is now quite valuable and much sought after.
3. In 1972, guitarist Mick Bolton left UFO and was replaced by which 16 year old wunderkind?

Answer: Michael Schenker

Even though he was only 16, German native Schenker was an old hand, having played his first gig with the Scorpions aged just 11. He appeared on the Scorpions' debut album, "Lonesome Crow" in 1972, and while touring to publicise this album, as support act to UFO, he was offered the chance to join the band.
4. "Doctor Doctor" from 1974 is still probably UFO's best known track. What was the name of the album on which it appeared?

Answer: Phenomenon

"Doctor Doctor", like the majority of the tracks on this album, was written by the new songwriting team of Phil Mogg and Michael Schenker. Also on "Phenomenon" was "Rock Bottom", a six minute album track that is often at least double that when performed live as Schenker shows off his skills.
5. In 1983, long standing UFO bass player Pete Way formed the band Fastway, with which well known rock guitarist?

Answer: Eddie Clarke

"Fast" Eddie Clarke had recently left Motorhead and the two quickly formed a new band utilising both of their names. Unfortunately, Way had a contract with UFO's record company from which he couldn't escape, and even though he had formed the band, half named the band and recruited ex Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley and future Flogging Molly vocalist Dave King to the band, he wasn't able to record or tour with them. Clarke recruited Charlie McCracken from Rory Gallagher's band, Taste, as bass player, and in order to fulfill his contract. Way joined Ozzy Osbourne's band as bass player.
6. The first UFO album featuring Paul Chapman on guitar was 1980's "No Place To Run". Which legend of the music industry produced this album?

Answer: George Martin

"No Place To Run" reached a very respectable number 11 in the UK charts and number 51 on the Billboard 200 in USA and featured a cover of "Mystery Train", which as well as being recorded by Elvis Presley in 1955 had also been performed by The Band at their "Last Waltz" farewell concert in 1976. George Martin, often referred to as the fifth Beatle, also produced albums by Jeff Beck, Cheap Trick, Little River Band and Ultravox.
7. In 1980, keyboard player from Wild Horses, Neil Carter, replaced Paul Raymond in the band. Where did Carter make his live UFO debut?

Answer: Reading Festival

Headliners at Reading in 1980 were Rory Gallagher, Whitesnake and UFO so this was quite the debut gig for Carter, but he proved himself more than capable. Also on the bill at Reading that year were Gillan, Def Leppard and Iron Maiden.
8. In 1979, UFO released a live album, which is still revered by musicians and fans alike after all these years. What was it called?

Answer: Strangers In The Night

"Strangers In The Night" was mainly recorded in Chicago when UFO were supporting Blue Oyster Cult and continually comes in high on lists of best live rock albums. Influential guitarist, Slash, famed for his work with Guns n Roses, has raved about the album in the past, telling Noisecreep in 2011, "'Strangers In The Night' was a record that I played the hell out of when I was younger."
9. UFO have had several talented drummers in their 50 year career. Which man, son of an even more famous drummer, joined the band for their 2004 album, "You Are Here"?

Answer: Jason Bonham

Bonham is the son of Led Zeppelin legend John Bonham and was with the band for this one studio album as well as the live "Showtime" album, recorded during the accompanying tour. He has also performed with rock icons such as Sammy Hagar, Ted Nugent, Joe Bonamassa and in 1994 appeared alongside Paul Rodgers and Slash at Woodstock II.
10. In 2017, UFO released their first album of cover versions, entitled "The Salentino Cuts." Which song made famous by the movie "Easy Rider" (1969) did the band include on this album?

Answer: The Pusher

"The Pusher" was a song written by Hoyt Axton but brought into the big time, first by Steppenwolf on their debut album in 1968 and then by the inclusion of their version in the 1969 film. Also included on UFO's covers album are tracks originally made famous by artists such as John Mellencamp. The Animals, ZZ Top and Montrose.
