Styx was trying to compete with the synthesized, shallow, Nu-Wav, Techno, '80s Pop sound in '83 and '84 as those type of bands were increasingly popular. This is evident with "Kilroy Was Here" and this song; the only studio track to appear on "Caught In The Act - Live". I think that this song and "Mr. Roboto" are the only places Styx was able to make this style work.

But when it did work, it sounded better than anything the groups in that genre were producing, in my humble opinion.
