Willem Frederik was born in the Hague in 1772. He proclaimed himself King of the Netherlands and Duke of Luxembourg on March 16, 1815 and abdicated the throne in 1840.

In 1815 the title of King of the Netherlands was new. From 1795-1814 the country had been under French rule and before that the head of the Dutch state was the stadtholder.

Johan Friso Bernhard Christiaan David van Oranje-Nassau van Amsberg was the second son of Queen Beatrix. He was buried under an avalanche while skiing in Austria in February of 2012. He was resuscitated and remained in a vegatative state until his death in August of 2013.

Princess Irene Emma Elisabeth is the second child of Queen Juliana. While studying in Madrid, Irene met Carlos Hugo, Duke of Parma, and secretly converted to Catholicism. The couple married in Rome in 1964 and had four children before divorcing in 1981.
