Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was Queen Victoria born?

Answer: 1819

She was born in 1819, ascended the throne in 1837, and married in 1840.
2. Prince Albert, Victoria's husband (and first cousin), was from which country?

Answer: Germany

He was an obscure German prince before he married Victoria.
3. How many children did Victoria and Albert have?

Answer: 9

Victoria, Albert, Alfred, Alice, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold, and Beatrice are the children of Victoria and Albert. The Church of England didn't allow contraceptives and the doctors at the time had a poor understanding of gynecology.
4. Victoria had a poor childhood. Her mother, the Duchess of Kent, treated her poorly along with which man?

Answer: Sir John Conroy

The Duke of Kent was Victoria's father and died very early on so she never knew him. King William IV, who ruled before Victoria, treated her wonderfully (he was her uncle). Lord Melbourne was Victoria's first Prime Minister and she looked up to him as a father figure.
5. What is NOT true of the proposal and marriage of Victoria and Albert?

Answer: Albert proposed to Victoria and she accepted

Albert NEVER proposed to Victoria. He wasn't allowed to because of his title of being a prince. Victoria fell head over heels in love when she first saw him (And I don't blame her. Albert's pretty good looking :))
6. Which one of Victoria and Albert's children was the most troublesome?

Answer: Albert a.k.a 'Bertie'

In modern terms, we'd refer to him as a 'rebellious punk.' He smoked, drank, and participated in debauchery. He was a problem for his parents, especially due to the fact that he was next-in-line for the throne of England.
7. What bad habit did Queen Victoria disapprove of?

Answer: Smoking

She dissapproved of smoking, believe it or not, putting her ahead of her time.
8. Queen Victoria mourned the loss of her husband, Albert, for practically the rest of her life.

Answer: True

After Prince Albert died of typhoid (and various other ailments), Victoria never really got over his death.
9. After her daughter Alice died in 1878, Victoria adopted her 'orphaned' granddaughter, Princess Alex. Which monarch did Alex marry?

Answer: Tsar Nicholas II

She married into the ill-fated Romanov family of Russia where she bore Nicholas five children, one of which was a hemophiliac (Victoria's son, Leopold was also a hemophiliac so it ran in the family).
10. When did Queen Victoria die?

Answer: 1901

She died in 1901, just one year after the birth of Elizabeth II's mother.
