Known as King Alfonso the Great, the mighty King helped unify many parts of Spain and helped link Spain with England by marrying the daughter of Henry II of England. He came to the throne at the age of fifteen and what was to become Spain was involved in quarrels, spats and sometimes outright war.

He founded the first Spanish university, a studium generale at Palencia. He was the father of eleven children and was succeeded by his son Henry I.

The fact that she produced only a daughter and no sons caused her husband Henry VIII to have their marriage annulled. Catherine died at the age of 50 in the same year as her replacement, Anne Boleyn.

She was the wife of Philip I of Spain and was herself the queen. Between her father and son she ended up in the Convent of Santa Clara in Tordesillas and spent five decades there while her male relatives ruled.

She was definately grief stricken over the death of her husband and was the mother of three queens and two emperors.
