Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which convicted murderer, from Seattle, became better known by a nickname during his long incarceration?

Answer: Robert Stroud

Stroud acquired the nickname 'Birdman of Alcatraz' due to his interest in rearing birds while in prison. He was originally imprisoned at Leavenworth, following a conviction for murder. While there, he found and raised some baby sparrows before being allowed to keep numerous canaries in his cell. Stroud became something of a celebrity, even publishing a book about the diseases of canaries. Although his nickname references Alcatraz, he was not allowed to keep his birds in that prison, where he was transferred in 1942.

The other three men also had nicknames, but these were acquired prior to their arrests, not during imprisonment. DeSalvo was known as 'The Boston Strangler', Ramirez was 'The Night Stalker' and Berkowitz was 'Son of Sam'.
2. Which Seattle born sprinter, and hurdler, overcame Graves disease to win Olympic gold in both 1992 and 1996?

Answer: Gail Devers

Gail's career came to halt in 1990 when she was diagnosed with Graves disease, having had health problems for the previous two years. As an athlete, she was limited in the medication she could take, since some of the available drugs were banned as being performance enhancing.

She overcame the setback to win 100 metres gold medals at both Barcelona and Atlanta, with a further gold for the relay at the latter games. Devers also won several gold medals at World Championships, including for the hurdles, which had eluded her at the Olympics.
3. Well, hello. This thoroughly modern actress and singer made her name in musical theatre and film, before turning to television. Who is this Seattle native?

Answer: Carol Channing

Among Carol's best known roles are Dolly, in 'Hello, Dolly!' on stage and Muzzy in the 1967 film version of 'Thoroughly Modern Millie', so I hope my not too subtle hints in the question helped you identify her. Channing was born in Seattle in 1921, but lived there only briefly before her family relocated to San Francisco. Having started her career in 1941, Channing was still appearing on television shows into the twenty-first century.
4. The band Soundgarden was formed in Seattle, and the lead singer was also born there. Which of these is he?

Answer: Chris Cornell

All the singers I gave you come from bands formed in Seattle, but only Cornell was actually born there. The band's success is primarily from album sales, with the 1994 album 'Superunknown' being the best selling.

Eddie Vedder sings for Pearl Jam, Dave Grohl founded Foo Fighters and Jerry Cantrell is from Alice in Chains.
5. With her first major success being the 1967 album 'Wildflowers', which of these female singers was born in Seattle in 1939?

Answer: Judy Collins

All four ladies sang 'folk music', in its widest sense, with Judy Collins often singing songs written by Joni Mitchell, such as 'Both Sides, Now' and 'Chelsea Morning'. She also had some success with her version of Pete Seeger's 'Turn! Turn! Turn!', although The Byrds did rather better with it in 1965.

Joni Mitchell was born in Canada, Joan Baez in New York, and Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul and Mary) originated from Kentucky.
6. Gypsy Rose Lee was born in Seattle in the early 1900s. What was her original surname?

Answer: Hovick

Gypsy Rose Lee's name has become almost synonymous with the art of tasteful striptease in burlesque shows. Her birth name was Rose Louise Hovick - known in the family by her second name, as her mother was also named Rose. As well as her performances in vaudeville, Rose also appeared in several films, using the name Louise Hovick, and on television shows.

The film 'Gypsy', a fictional version of her life story was released in 1962, with Natalie Wood playing the role of Gypsy Rose Lee.
7. Which Seattle born musician is best known as an instrumentalist, with the saxophone being his instrument of choice?

Answer: Kenny G

Kennth Gorelick, to give him his full name, was born and raised in Seattle, and even attended the University of Washington in his home city. He took up playing the saxophone at the age of ten, joining his first band when only seventeen and still studying. Arista Records signed him in 1982, and Kenny became successful pretty much immediately, with his first album, called 'Kenny G', selling well and being praised by music critics. Regular album releases have followed, with success on both the US Jazz charts and the mainstream Billboard Hot 200.
8. While primarily thought of as a Canadian, which comedian, particularly known for his improvisation skills, was born in Seattle in 1959?

Answer: Ryan Stiles

Myers, Hartman and Moranis were all born in Canada. Stiles was born in Seattle, to Canadian parents, although he was raised in Canada. He made his name by appearing on the television show 'Whose Line is it Anyway?', initially in the UK and then in the US version.
9. Which sportsman, born in Seattle in 1982, made his name by travelling very fast on ice?

Answer: Apolo Ohno

Ohno came to prominence as a speed skater in the 2000s, winning gold medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics (Salt Lake City) and again in 2006 (Turin) over different distances. He also racked up eight golds at World Championships, with numerous silvers and bronzes to add to his collection. Ohno retired from competitive sport in 2013.

The others also performed on ice - Stojko (Canadian) and Davison (born in California) took part in figure skating while Mario Lemieux (also Canadian) played ice hockey.
10. Which singer would certainly believe that Seattle is up where she belongs, since she was born there in 1947?

Answer: Jennifer Warnes

Although born in Seattle, Jennifer was raised in California, where she began her career singing in clubs, before signing her first recording contract in 1968. In 1971, she met Leonard Cohen, touring regularly with him. The two remained friends until Cohen's death in 2016.

In 1976, Jennifer had a Billboard Hot 100 hit with 'Right Time of the Night', which reached number six. Her two major hits both came from films, and duets: in 1982 she sang 'Up Where We Belong', with Joe Cocker from 'An Officer and a Gentleman', while in 1987 she duetted with Bill Medley on '(I've Had) the Time of My Life' from the film 'Dirty Dancing'. Both of these songs hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
