Edgar Hoover in 1936, although he wrote in his memoirs that he was held at gunpoint by other agents until Hoover arrived on the scene to nab the publicity. Karpis was in prison for 33 years, much of it at Alcatraz. He died in 1979 from an overdose of sleeping pills just after completing his memoirs.

Fun trivia fact: Allegedly, Kate "Ma" Barker played no role in the crimes committed by her sons' (Herman, Lloyd, Doc and Freddie) gang. J. Karpis later confirmed Mrs. Barker had nothing to do with her sons' crimes.
