Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Corban is found in Mark 7:11. What does corban mean?

Answer: an offering dedicated to God

Jesus condemned the Pharisees for ignoring the intent of the law while demanding strict letter of the law. Corban was practiced to subvert the law. By giving the inheritance to corban one could say it belongs to the Lord and not be obligated to help a needed parent.
The Pharisees were said to have nullified the commandment to honor the parents by allowing a child to declare his possessions devoted to God so that the parents would have no claim. How do you see Numbers 30:2 in relation with Mark 7:11?
2. In theological terms, conversion is:

Answer: a process involving faith and repentance

Many people have faith in God. However, true conversion is more than this in the view of theologians. As the term suggests (it is derived from words meaning turn around), it requires a change of state which leads one into a new faith. Most Christians use it exclusively to refer to the process of turning from sin to God, through faith in Jesus Christ.

It can, however, be applied to any change of faith. The act of conversion is often recognised through the sacrament of baptism, but it is not the same thing as baptism. Likewise, following a conversion one might attend church more often, and feel a profound faith in God; those are products of conversion, rather than conversion.
3. The gladius was a short two-edged sword carried by Roman legionaries.

Answer: True

The "two-edged sword" is listed several times in the Bible. In Hebrew 4:12, the Word of God is said to be "sharper than any two-edged sword." Paul applies another meaning in Ephesians 6:17, "the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God." This the only offensive weapon necessary for a Christian.

The Word of God, like the gladius, can be used very effectively when a soldier is well trained in the use of the sword. It is short and can be quick, striking both directions without changing hands, and its sharp point could pierce armor.

The proper use of Scripture in spiritual battle enables the Christian to stand fast and defeat the wiles of the devil. The two-edged sword (Word of God) gives life as well as takes it - eternal life or, eternal death (separation from God, spiritual death).
4. This Hebrew name for "Lord" (only the "L" is capitalized) first appears in Genesis 15:2. When spelled as "lord" it means ruler, sir, man. What is this Hebrew name?

Answer: Adonai

Adonai (Lord) is almost always in a plural possessive form that gives it a strong connection of the trinity and deity of God. When Adon is used in the singular form, it is always used as man. Abraham is called lord in Genesis 23:6. Lord is most commonly used in the New Testament, because Jesus is Christians' Adonai, the Lord, master and owner of all.

When all capitalized letters are used (LORD or GOD), it usually signifies that the Hebrew says Jehovah.
5. Maranatha is a word in 1 Corinthians 16:22. What does it refer to?

Answer: it means "Our Lord come!"

This Aramaic word was used in prayers, or to end prayers, and to express a desire for the Lord's return. It is translated different ways by Christians: "until He comes" or simple "come", and "come Lord Jesus".
6. This Hebrew word for God (only the "G" is capitalized) is the Almighty God. He is the God, the Creator. He is the all powerful God. The prefix and suffix "El" on names is the root word for God, (IsraEL, ELisha, ELizabeth, ELijah, etc.) DaniEL - God is my judge. What name for God am I talking about?

Answer: Elohim

Elohim is the strong creative God. Elohim is plural in form but not in number. This is the first name of God. There are many names of God in the Bible, however, there is only one God. God has different attributes. El Elyon, The Most High God (Genesis 18:18), El Shaddai The All Sufficient God (Genesis 17:1)e.g.

The name Elohim is always spelled God, while GOD and LORD(all captials) is Jehovah. Lord is Adonai. See and note the spellings in: Isaiah 25:1 and 25:8, and throughout the Bible.
7. This pillar of cloud led God's people by day, and a pillar of fire by night in Exodus 13:21. It is the cloud above the mercy seat. It is the LORD'S presence in Leviticus 16:2. What is it called?

Answer: Shekinah or glory-cloud

Shekinah is the presence of the LORD (Jehovah). His presence dwelled in the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle above the mercy seat. Israel was to totally trust upon the LORD's protection and provision during the wilderness experience. Numbers 9:15. Because His temple was desecrated, the glory of the LORD departed. Ezekiel 10:18 and 11:23.

He departed through the East Gate, across the Kidron Valley and Mount of Olives, the same way that Jesus came to Jerusalem and to the temple. His prophesied return will be on the Mount of Olives across the valley of Jehoshaphat and Mount Zion (Jerusalem) - Joel 3:12; Zechariah 14:4.
8. Ichabod is the name of the son of Phinehas. 1 Samuel 4:19-22. What does his name mean?

Answer: The Glory has departed

Israel went into battle against the Philistines and lost. The ark was captured and Eli and his two sons Hophni and Phinehas died. Afterwards, Phinehas' wife gave birth to a son and named him Ichabod because the glory had departed from Israel with the capture of the ark of God.
9. Accursed, found in Galatians 1:8, has a stronger meaning in Greek. In Greek it means military desertion which was punishable by death. It also means to set aside for destruction. The Greek word for accursed is:

Answer: anathema

Paul sternly admonished the Galatians for turning away "so soon," or departing from the true gospel by perverting it. The Galatians were adding requirements and ceremonies as necessary for salvation, therefore, they embraced a different religion, or another gospel. "Accursed" in English does not carry the Greek meaning of letting one be declared dead or separated from true believers.
10. This word means "holding back."

Answer: forbearance

In contract law, forbearance means to refrain from doing what one has a legal right to do. In Christianity, it can be used to describe God graciously holding back His judgment from sinners.
