Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What tribe of Israel did Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego come from?

Answer: Judah

While Jehoiakim was King of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, attacked Jerusalem and God delivered Jehoiakim into his hands. Nebuchadnezzar then ordered the chief of the court officials to bring in some of the Israelites, young men without any physical defect who wanted to learn all things. Among the men chosen were Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

This can be found in Daniel 1.
2. Who was in charge of teaching Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego the ways of the Babylonians?

Answer: Ashpenaz

Ashpenaz was the chief of the court officials. The king put Ashpenaz in charge of obtaining and training the young men from Judah. He was to train them for three years and then they would go into the king's service. This can be found in Daniel 1:3-5.
3. The names Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were names given to the young men by the chief official. What were their original names?

Answer: Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah

Daniel 1 says that Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah were among the ones brought from Judah. The chief official gave them all new names. Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar, to Hananiah (not to be confused with the false prophet of the same name in Jeremiah 28) he gave the name Shadrach, to Mishael he gave the name Meshach and Azariah got the name Abednego.
4. How tall was the statue that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow to, according to Daniel 3 of the NIV?

Answer: Sixty cubits

Daniel 3:1 says that Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold that was ninety feet tall and nine feet wide. He set it up on the plains of Dura in Babylon and had all of the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other officials come and dedicate it.
5. Which of the following was not in the list of instruments that would play when the people were to worship the statue in Daniel 3 (NIV)?

Answer: clashing cymbal

A herald came and told the people that, when they heard the sound of the horns, flutes, zithers, lyres, harps and pipes, they were commanded to fall down and worship the golden statue. This can be found in Daniel 3:5.
6. Who went to the king and told him that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego weren't worshipping the statue?

Answer: Some astrologers

When the music started everyone fell down and worshipped the statue. But some astrologers went to the king and told him that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego weren't worshipping the statue. They said that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were paying no attention to him and weren't serving his gods. This can be found in Daniel 3.
7. What was King Nebuchadnezzar's response to what he was told about Shadrach's, Meshach's and Abednego's failure to worship his statue?

Answer: He was furious

Daniel 3 says that Nebuchadnezzar was furious and summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. He told them that if they didn't worship his statue they would be punished. He said that no god would be able to save them from him.
8. Did Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego try to talk Nebuchadnezzar out of throwing them into the furnace?

Answer: No

Nope, they said they knew that God would save them and, even if he didn't, they would never serve Nebuchadnezzar's gods or his statue of gold. Then he was even more furious with them and ordered that they be thrown into the furnace. This can be found in Daniel 3:16-18.
9. The king ordered that the furnace be heated more than usual before having Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego thrown in. How much hotter was it to be?

Answer: Seven times hotter

The king was even more furious with them after they openly refused to worship his statue, so he ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. He also ordered that the strongest men in the army tie them up and throw them in. The furnace was so hot that the men ordered to throw Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in were toast. This can be found in Daniel 3:19-23.
10. According to the NIV, what was King Nebuchadnezzar's reaction when he saw a fourth man in the furnace with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego?

Answer: He was amazed

Daniel 3:24 says that he was so amazed that he leaped to his feet and asked his advisors how many men they'd thrown in. When they said that they'd only thrown in three, he said that he saw a fourth man in the fire. He said that the fourth man looked like the son of the gods.

He then went over to the furnace and called for the three men to come out. They came out unscathed and without the smell of fire on them. Then Nebuchadnezzar praised God for what he had done. He then made a decree that whoever said anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego would be cut into pieces and his house turned into a pile of rubble.
