Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Adam and Eve were driven from the Garden of Eden after eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. What deterrent was used to keep them from returning to the Garden?

Answer: Cher'u-bim and a flaming sword

In Genesis 3:24, the Bible states: "...and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cher'u-bims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life." Now that man had fallen from their previously sinless state, God could not allow Adam and Eve to further compound their sin by eating from the tree of life, which would have caused them to live forever, but separated from God.
2. Genesis Chapter 32 began with Jacob in quite a dilemma with a hostile father-in-law behind him, and a brother who had wanted to kill him twenty years prior. The night prior to his reuniting with Esau, he camped in a place where the angels of God met him. What did Jacob name this place?

Answer: Ma-ha-na'im

In Genesis 32:2, the word Jacob used translates to two camps or double-camp. The reason was that Jacob's entourage and the Lord's host of angels stayed in the same spot.
3. When Joseph interpreted the dream of Pharaoh's butler while they were both imprisoned, Joseph asked the butler to remember the kindness to obtain his own release. How long did Joseph have to wait for the butler to return the favor?

Answer: Two years

In Genesis 41:1, the Bible says: "And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed..." Verse 9 states: "Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day:" The butler then went on to describe Joseph's ability to interpret his dream while in prison.
4. In Genesis 15:2, Abram was still concerned he would have no male heir, though God had twice told him otherwise in Genesis 12:7 and 13:16. Abram asked God if he should adopt someone so his lineage would continue. Whom was Abram considering adopting?

Answer: Eliezer of Damascus

God had already promised the land of Canaan to Abram's seed, and told him that his seed would be numerous. At his advanced age, the prospects of fathering children without divine intervention were doubtful. If God had intended Abram to adopt, he would have told him so.
5. How old was Noah when he entered the Ark?

Answer: 600

In Genesis 7:6, the Bible states: "And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth."
6. In Genesis 13:16, God told Abram that he would make from him a great people. What did he compare his seed to?

Answer: The dust of the earth

God promised that his descendants would be numerous, though he and his wife were of advanced age. Genesis 13:16 states: "And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered." Quite prodigious, considering Abram and Sarai were well into their eighties by this time and without any children.
7. During the great famine that Joseph had predicted, Jacob sent all his sons but Benjamin into Egypt to buy corn. Which brother was kept behind in Egypt as assurance they would return with their brother Benjamin?

Answer: Simeon

Genesis 42:24 - "And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes." Joseph wouldn't be fully satisfied that his brothers had changed over the years until he saw Benjamin with his own eyes -- and he wanted to see his mother's son Benjamin.
8. In the beginning of Genesis chapter 23, we are told of the death of Sarah. How old did she live to be?

Answer: 127

Genesis 23:1 - "And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah."
9. God commanded Jacob to return to Beth-el after his sons spoiled the city of Shechem. At this time, he renewed the Abrahamic covenant with Jacob. What other thing of significance happened at this meeting?

Answer: God renamed him Israel

In Genesis 35:10, God renamed Jacob Israel, which roughly translates to "He fights or wrestles with God" -- most likely referring the night he wrestled all night with an angel or perhaps with God himself, just prior to his reconciliation with Esau in Chapter 32.
10. The time from Adam to Noah is often referred to as an age of the patriarchs, not to be confused with another age of the patriarchs: the time from Abraham to Jacob, who were the patriarchs of Israel. What was significant about this era was the great longevity of these people before the great flood. How many are recorded as living 900 years or longer?

Answer: 7

Genesis chapter 5 gives the genealogy from Adam to Noah. These are the men listed there who lived to be 900 or greater: Adam (930), Seth (912), Enos (905), Cainan (910), Jared (962), Methuselah (969), and Noah (950). One of the sadder verses in the Bible for me is Genesis 5:27, which reads: "And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: AND HE DIED." The grandfather of Noah lived nearly a millennium, and his listed accomplishments were that he fathered sons and daughters and died.
