Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To what extent does physical attractiveness span cultural barriers? Choose best answer.

Answer: Mostly true - cultural concepts of beauty are generally the same.

Research shows that people tend to agree extremely well about who is or is not attractive, even across racial and ethnic lines (Cunningham et al., 1995), however, the specific content of the stereotypes depends on culture (Dion, Pak, and Dion, 1990).
2. Age is generally an unimportant characteristic of men, when viewed by women, in terms of determining physical attractiveness. With that in mind, which of the following statements is true?

Answer: In men, age is less important for reproductive success

Women have a relatively limited age span in which reproduction is possible, whereas males ordinarily can reproduce from puberty into old age (Kenrick et al., 1994).
3. In terms of appearance anxiety, who, men or women, indicate feeling more self-conscious about their appearances?

Answer: women

Women indicate more appearance anxiety than men, and high scores on this test are associated with experiencing social anxiety, feeling unattractive in childhood, and having had few dates in high school. This anxiety is not necessarily justified. People are not very accurate at estimating their own attractiveness as judged by others (Dion, Dion, and Keelan, 1990). Men (but not women) have been found to OVERestimate how good they look (Gabriel, Critelli, and Ee, 1994).
4. According to a 1986 study, physical attractiveness is seen as a (positive, negative) trait for female politicians.

Answer: negative

Attractiveness is a plus for males running for political office, but not for female candidates (Sigelman et al., 1986), possibly because elected officials are not "supposed" to look feminine. (Primarily, leadership is considered a "masculine" trait).
5. Which of the following statements about physical attractiveness and self-esteem is true?

Answer: Attractive individuals are no more likely to have high self-esteem than the less attractive

(Kenealy et al., 1991). A possible reason that good-looking people don't necessarily evaluate themselves highly, is that when you are very attractive, you tend to believe that others value you ONLY for your appearance (Major, Carrington, and Carnevale, 1984)
6. By qualitatively studying personal ads, it was found that women stress their ________ and men stress their ________.

Answer: attractiveness material resources

Deaux and Hanna, 1984 Harrison and Saeed, 1977
7. By quantitatively studying the number of replies to personal ads, the number of replies to ads placed by women was negatively correlated to the woman's age. A personal placed by a man was most effective if it indicated a(n) _________ individual.

Answer: mature, rich, educated

(Baize and Schroeder, 1995)
8. Most of the stereotypes based on appearance are quite wrong. The only characteristics actually associated with attractiveness are those related to popularity and ___________.

Answer: good interpersonal skills

(Feingold, 1992; Kenealy et al., 1991; Johnstone, Frame, and Bouman, 1992; Reis, Nezlek and Wheeler, 1989; O'Grady, 1989)
9. A 1990 experiment used computer graphics technology to combine two or more faces into one face. Is it true or false that the resulting face was usually considered to be more attractive than its components?

Answer: true

(Langlois and Roggman, 1990). One possible reason for this is that the average of multiple individual faces is perceived as more familiar than any of the actual faces. Familiarity leads to a more positive evaluation which, in turn, generates positive affect.
10. TRUE or FALSE: Females are more responsive to male attractiveness than males are to female attractiveness.

Answer: False

In fact, the opposite is true (Feingold, 1990, 1992b; Pierce, 1992), although both sexes respond strongly to the physical attractiveness of those they meet (Collins and Zebrowitz, 1992). Also, individuals differ in the importance they attach to physical appearance (Cash and Jacobi, 1992).
