Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Anisocoria means that you have a part of one eye bigger or smaller than the same part in the other. Which part of the eye is this?

Answer: Pupil

Anisocoria is a rather common condition, and has no major effect on the performance of the eyes. Symptoms for anisocoria include eye pain, reduced eye movement, headaches and drooping eyelids. As anisocoria doesn't affect eyesight, there is no treatment needed unless it is connected to another more serious disease.
2. This serious disease is one that clouds the eye lens. It can be caused by several factors including genetics, eye injury or even other eye diseases. Which disease, which is also the word for powerful waterfalls, am I talking about?

Answer: Cataracts

Cataracts can cause serious vision problems, and even lead to blindness. The best way to get rid of it, if it is serious, is cataract surgery. The risk of developing cataracts can be increased by smoking, diabetes, family history and exposure to sunlight.

Coloboma is a condition in which normal tissue that should be in or around the eye is missing from birth.
3. There is an eye condition called presbyopia. What is the literal meaning of the word?

Answer: Aging eye

Given the literal name of it, you can tell it is an age-related condition. Presbyopia is extremely common; most people develop it at some point of their lives. It makes it more difficult to see very close, which affects your ability to do certain things like reading.
4. There is also a quite well-known disease that has been classified as "pink eye". What is another term to describe "pink eye"?

Answer: Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, a membrane that covers the eyelids and the sclera (white part of the eye). It is called pink eye because of the reddish appearance the eyes of someone have when they have been infected.
5. Styes are bumps in the eyelids, and they can happen if one of the hairs that cover your eye is infected. What is such a hair called?

Answer: Eyelash

The eyelashes are more important than you think. They protect the eyes from unwanted debris, but are very sensitive to touch. They are very thin, so they can easily enter the eye and cause discomfort.

A stye can appear when oil gets stuck in the eye (lack of production of tears normally causes this).
6. There is a disease that damages the eye's optic nerve, which if left untreated can cause blindness. Which is it? (Hint: many relate it to marijuana.)

Answer: Glaucoma

The optic nerve that is affected is the one that sends signals from the retina to the brain. When treating glaucoma, the main objective is to lower the intraocular pressure. The disease is usually connected with marijuana because the drug has been proven to be able to lower IOP, but for a short period of time, and can have negative effects on overall health.

This is why marijuana is not the number one choice for doctors to prescribe.
7. The next disorder is a common condition, and is inherited. Which condition is also called nearsightedness?

Answer: Myopia

It is important to mention that myopia is NOT an eye disease, but an eye focusing disorder. Although it is usually diagnosed between ages 8 to 12, myopia can also happen to adults. Myopia may be worse in the teenage years because the body is growing quickly at that stage.
8. Astigmatism is a common condition. It is caused by an irregular curvature of which part of the eye?

Answer: Cornea

In the majority of the cases, people are already born with astigmatism. If the cornea or the lens are not smooth and evenly curved, then light rays are not refracted as they should be, which makes it a refractive error. Astigmatism is one type of refractive error.
9. Which of the following can not only affect your vision but also your hearing?

Answer: Usher Syndrome

Scottish ophthalmologist Charles Usher described the disease in 1914, although it was mentioned before by Albrecht von Grafe.

A symptom for this genetic disorder is loss of vision because of retinitis pigmentosa.
10. Which of the following conditions is characterized by swelling of the eye and redness?

Answer: Blepharitis

Blepharitis causes stinging and burning sensations in the eyes. Symptoms include itching, redness and chronic inflammation.
