Jamaica's first runner, Alison Beckford, fell midway through the first lap, opening the way for Australia (Gold), England (Silver) and Scotland (Bronze).

The Hockeyroos bettered the previous record, which they set in Kuala Lumpur in 1998 when they beat Namibia 15-1. They eventually won bronze after going down to England 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Brad McGee set a new Commonwealth Games record time of 4min 16.359sec during qualification for this event. This was made all the more remarkable considering he had completed the Tour de France just days before, and survived a crash into a ditch that ended with him being tangled in a barbed-wire fence midway through the famous race.

This was also McGee's third consecutive gold medal in this event at the Comonwealth Games.
