Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these never hit 600 home runs in their career?

Answer: Frank Robinson

The great Frank Robinson started his career with the Reds in 1956 as the Rookie of the Year. He won the NL MVP with Cincinnati in 1961 also. In Cincinnati he had a stellar career, and the Reds showed their 'appreciation' by trading him to the Baltimore Orioles for the 1966 season. Robinson returned the favor by batting for the Triple Crown, winning the AL MVP, and winning the World Series MVP all in the 1966 season. Frank retired in 1976 with 586 home runs. An easy Hall of Fame induction, they opened their doors to him in 1982. Griffey Jr hit 630, Thome 612, and Sosa 609.
2. Unlike the other three pitchers, which big arm never threw 300 strikeouts in a season?

Answer: Roger Clemens

Roger pitched from 1984-2007. He topped out at 292 strikeouts in the 1997 season. Amongst his credits he won seven pitching titles, seven Cy Young Awards, and one league MVP Award. Clemens led the league in strikeouts five times. He pitched for the Red Sox, Yankees, Astros, and Blue Jays over his 24 seasons. Johnson struck out 300+ in a season twice with the Senators, Richard twice with the Astros, and Schilling twice with the Phillies.
3. Three of these managers lost over 2000 games while they stood at the wheel of teams. Which of these managers did *not* lose over 2000 games?

Answer: Joe Torre

Torre played mostly as a catcher for the Braves. He won the NL MVP with the Cardinals in 1971. After retiring his mitt in late 1977 he took full control of the Mets. From 1982-1984 he was with the Braves, then the Cardinals from 1990-1995. In 1996 he was standing tall in the pinstripes for the Yankees until 2007.

He retired after three seasons with the Dodgers in 2010. Joe won two Manager of the Year Awards in 1996 and 1998 and took the Yankees to six AL pennants and four World Series crowns.

His career managing record was 2326-1997 after 29 seasons of managing. Harris' record was 2158-2219, LaRussa had a 2728-2365 record, and Mauch with 1902-2307. Hall of Fame manager John McGraw didn't reach the 2000-mark either with his 2763-1948 over 33 seasons.
4. Which National League team lost a Major League record 19 double-headers in a season during the 1950s?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

After making it to a World Series trip in 1945 in a loss to the Tigers four games to three, they went on a downward slide in a few seasons after that. The season was in 1950 when they finished in seventh place of eight teams with the help of losing a record 19 double-headers.

The Cubs didn't have a starting pitcher with a winning record but was led by Bob Rush and his 13-20 season record. Cubs fans would have to wait until 2016 to win the glorious World Series against the Cleveland Indians four games to three.
5. Which of these New York Mets never won the Rookie of the Year Award?

Answer: Gary Carter

The Hall of Famer Carter began his career with the Montreal Expos in 11 seasons. In December 1984, they traded him to the Mets in a four-for-one trade. Gary was an all-star 11 times and won the All-Star MVP Award twice. He retired in 1992 after 19 seasons, then was inducted into the Hall in 2003. Seaver won the ROY Award in 1967, Matlack in 1972, and Strawberry in 1983.
6. Three of these pitchers threw more than 20 innings in one game and nobody hit even one batter. Which one didn't do it?

Answer: Hoyt Wilhelm

Ironically, both Cadore and Oeschger were opposing pitchers in the same game. On May 1, 1920, the Brooklyn Robins and Boston Braves faced off in the 26-inning game which set a record for the longest game and not having a hit batsman on either side. The game was finally called due to darkness and declared a 1-1 tie. Ted Lyons of the White Sox went 21 innings on May 24, 1929, and set the American League modern day record.
7. Which of these American League hitters never hit two grand slams in one game?

Answer: Boog Powell

Powell was a first baseman with the Orioles in the 1960s and 1970s. The Red Sox shortstop Garciaparra banged his two in May 1999 off the Seattle Mariners. Robinson was in the outfield of Baltimore in June 1970 when he got his two in a game against the Washington Senators. Ventura got his two big ones with the White Sox in 1995 dished up by the Texas Rangers.
8. Which of these teams was not a part of the National League in the league's inaugural season in 1876?

Answer: Brooklyn Bridegrooms

The Brooklyn franchise began all their endeavors in 1884 as the Bridegrooms in the American Association. In 1889 they won the league's pennant before jumping to the National League in 1890 and finished first of eight teams again in their new league. After numerous name changes to Grooms, back to Bridegrooms, Superbas, Robins, and others, the franchise finally stuck on the 'Dodgers' name in 1932.

They would have to wait until 1955 to win their first World Series. In the inaugural season of the National League, the Chicago White Stockings won the pennant over the Dark Blues and St. Louis Browns, who both finished six games back.
9. Which of these great pitchers never lost 20 games in a season?

Answer: Don Sutton

Sutton played in 23 seasons with 20 on the West Coast with the Dodgers, Angels, and Athletics. He retired in 1988 with a 324-156 career record. Don was a 20-game winner only once in his career. He was inducted into the Hall in 1998. The great Hall of Famer Johnson lost 20 games in a season twice with the Senators of Washington. McLain, after a stellar few seasons with the Tigers, went 10-22 with the Senators.

The Hall of Famer Roberts went 10-22 in 1957 with the Phillies.
10. Which of these franchises never lost 100 games in a season during the 20th Century?

Answer: Angels

The Angels franchise began as the Los Angeles Angels in 1961 under the management of Bill Rigney. Even after a few name changes, they never lost 100 games in a season. The Twins in Minnesota lost 100+ in 1982 and five times as the Washington Senators.

The Pirates hit the 100-loss mark five times in the century, the last being in 1985. The Yankees lost 102 and 103 games as the New York Highlanders before their name change in 1913.
