Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jerald Glazebrook (Jerry) was killed in his swimming pool at the beginning of the episode. What was his performer name?

Answer: The Alligator Man

Jerry suffered from ichthyosis, a congenital skin disease that makes the skin appear scaly. He seemed to be living a full and happy life, though, with his family.
2. What was the Reverend at Jerry's burial service missing?

Answer: arms

The Reverend was reading the service, and when he needed to turn the page, he lifted up his leg and turned the page with his bare toes.
3. Dr. Blockhead broke out of the turf below Jerry's coffin during the burial service to perform what he called an "impromptu tribute". For that tribute, he rammed a spike into what?

Answer: his chest

He claimed that because he hadn't known Jerry personally he wasn't able to give a eulogy, but would instead give an impromptu tribute consisting of ramming a spike into his chest. He held the spike to his chest and hammered it in, causing some sparks, and then screamed that he'd hit his left ventricle. The crowd at the service rushed him in disgust for ruining the service.
4. After Jerry's burial service, what did Mulder comment?

Answer: "I can't wait for the wake."

He and Scully seemed remarkably calm after sitting among the sideshow performers and seeing Dr. Blockhead's display.
5. What had Jerry's talent been?

Answer: escape artist

Sheriff Hamilton told Scully and Mulder that Jerry had been the best escape artist since Houdini and would have been headlining in Vegas if it hadn't been for his skin condition.
6. What did Hepcat Helm refer to Scully and Mulder as?

Answer: rubes

When Sheriff Hamilton finally got Helm's attention, he turned down the music, looked at the agents, and asked Hamilton, "Who're the rubes?" Hamilton told him that they were FBI agents and had some questions about Helm's work.
7. What did Hepcat Helm object to having his work called?

Answer: funhouse

Apparently, he'd corrected Hamilton many times in the past. He insisted that he didn't run a funhouse and said that it was a "tabernacle of terror."
8. Mulder asked Hepcat Helm about the drawings in the diner menu, saying he recognized all but one. What did Helm say that one was?

Answer: Figi Mermaid

A piece of carnival folklore, the Figi Mermaid was a mummified monkey sewed on the tail of a fish. Apparently, Barnum had made more money marketing it as a hoax, so Helm thought it possible that it was actually real and was only claimed false for business purposes.
9. What did Mr. Nutt have a degree in?

Answer: Hotel Management

The man was of short stature, and took offense when Mulder asked if he'd ever worked as a sideshow performer (a question Mulder seemed to be asking everyone in town). Nutt told him that he'd earned a degree in Hotel Management and proudly showed the agents his diploma.
10. In retaliation for Mulder's assumptions based on his height, Mr. Nutt noted some features of Mulder's appearance on which to make assumptions. What did Nutt NOT mention?

Answer: clean, fresh scent

Having characterized Mulder's features, demeanor, and necktie, Nutt claimed that his conclusion would be that Mulder worked for the government as an FBI agent. Nutt was trying to show how assumptions based on appearance do not take into account a person's full humanity and are often wrong, but his point was undermined when Mulder revealed that he was an FBI agent.
