Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which city did teams complete their first Detour task of the race?

Answer: Vancouver, British Columbia

After flying from St. John's, Newfoundland to Vancouver, British Columbia (across the entire country), teams spent all of the rest of their first leg of the race in B.C., completing their Road Block and Detour in the Downtown Vancouver area. After the Road Block, teams chose between two active tasks for their Detour, 'Pedal', which involved biking, and 'Paddle', which involved piloting a dragon boat. Ultimately, seven teams completed the bike polo challenge while only three paddled dragon boats before heading to the Pit Stop.
2. While the 'Pump It' Detour task in Leg 2 involved fighting forest fires, the 'Pull It' Detour task had teams use which of these?

Answer: Firearms

The 'Pull It' Detour task was completed by less teams than the 'Pump It' option, but it proved to be a quick choice for racers with patience and dexterity since they had to use a shotgun to take down fifteen clay pigeons. Zed and Shabbir, Adam and Andrea, Korey and Ivana, and Dan and Riya completed this one, taking turns to knock them down.

The other teams completed the 'Canada 150 Challenge; for this leg-- 'Pump It'-- which had them be firefighters for a day, putting out a simulated fire in the Fort McMurray area using a water pump.
3. How many clay pots did teams need to create in the 'Throw It' Detour task of Leg 3 (in Nelson, B.C.)?

Answer: Two

In Leg 3, teams headed to Selkirk College in Nelson, British Columbia to complete one of two tasks celebrating the local artisan community. In 'Throw It', teams ended up learning pottery, combining their efforts to create two clay mugs to the approval of the instructor.

In 'Strike It', they instead needed to work to create two coat hooks in a metalworking studio, bending and shaping metal rods to reflect a given design. Kenneth and Ryan ended up using their Express Pass to skip the Detour.
4. Which team suffered a back injury when attempting the 'In Sync' Detour task in Leg 4 (in Beijing)?

Answer: Korey and Ivana

In Beijing, China in Leg 4, teams took part in one of two Detour tasks at the Ying Tung Natatorium, one of which ('In Sync') involved synchronized diving from a five meter platform and the other of which 'In Line' involved learning a choreographed line dance with a flash mob. Several teams attempted the former task, attempting to earn points from the judges to get their next clue, but Korey and Ivana had to switch tasks when Ivana received some serious back pain.

This pain would follow her through subsequent legs. Doctors would later tell her (after the race) that she fractured three of her vertebrae.
5. In Leg 5, teams in Bangkok who completed the 'Bling It' Detour task had to purchase items with their own cash.

Answer: True

Korey and Ivana, Karen and Bert, and Zed and Shabbir took on this task which, while longer to complete despite 'Shred It' being a more physical task, could be completely doable for detail-oriented teams. That said, teams completing this task needed to pick out detailed items on a tuk-tuk and then purchase them at two markets using the money given to them over the course of the race.

The other teams, completed a surfing challenge while Adam and Andrea, who claimed the Fast Forward, didn't need to complete either.
6. How many teams were U-Turned after completing their Detour task in Ottawa in Leg 6?

Answer: Two

In Leg 6, teams celebrated the arts in Ottawa, taking on one of two tasks for their Detour. In 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips', teams headed to Commissioner's Park to build a cart and recreate a colourful tulip display containing ten different types of tulip to get their next clue. All six teams opted to take on this challenge.

In 'Get the Picture', teams were asked to head to the Canada Council Art Bank to locate and take photos of ten different works of art in the storage walls there. Kenneth and Ryan were U-Turned by Sam and Paul while Andrea and Ebonie were U-Turned by Korey and Ivana.

In both cases, the U-Turned teams had to complete the latter task.
7. In which province did teams complete Leg 7's 'Family Tree' and 'Find Your Dory' Detour options?

Answer: Newfoundland and Labrador

Leg 7 sent teams to Western Newfoundland, specifically to the regions in and around Corner Brook. In the Detour task, teams partook in activities in Gros Morne National Park, known for being a landing spot for Viking explorers hundreds of years ago. In 'Family Tree', Adam and Andrea and Karen and Bert celebrated just that, memorizing Norse Gods and placing them on a complex family tree.

In 'Find Your Dory', the remaining four teams paddled dory boats through Bonne Bay, searching the shorelines for lobster traps containing their next clue.
8. In Leg 8, teams attempting to complete the 'Up For a Drink' Detour had to note the tastes in what type of beverage?

Answer: Beer

While teams were given fourteen different flavours to choose from when identifying the types of beer on their flight from Casa Bruja, the task proved too difficult for the three teams attempting it. Teams had to identify only five, but the heat, the alcohol, and the exhaustion forced them all to take on the alternate task, 'Down For the Count', which required that they take up boxing in a local ring to perform six drills with an instructor.

These tasks were completed in Panama City, Panama in Leg 8.
9. Which team was U-Turned in Leg 9 (in Saskatchewan) forcing them to do both sides of the Detour?

Answer: Sam and Paul

Leg 9 took teams to rural Saskatchewan where a Detour task had them pick either 'The Cart' or 'The Horse'. Choosing 'The Cart', teams transported and used a grain auger to transport one thousand pounds of canola seeds, but those who went with 'The Horse' became part of a local horse auction to sell off a Clydesdale.

After this Detour, teams encountered a Double U-Turn and Sam and Paul and Adam and Andrea were U-Turned by Kenneth and Ryan and Korey and Ivana respectively. Both U-Turned teams had to go back and complete 'The Horse'.

While Sam and Paul rebounded to take first place, Adam and Andrea were subsequently eliminated.
10. The final Detour choice of the race (in Leg 10 in Sault Ste. Marie) gave teams the choice of working with alpacas or in which environment?

Answer: A lake

In the race's final Detour in Leg 10, teams chose between the tasks 'Alpac-It' and 'I'll Cast It'. In 'Alpac-It', teams needed to go to Mockin'bird Hill Pioneer Farm and guide alpacas through a marked course under a certain amount of time. Teams opting not to work with the potentially stubborn animals could instead head to Kinsman Park and wade into a lake to test their skills at fly fishing, casting their lines into targeted areas to collect their clue. Karen and Bert and Korey and Ivana did the fishing task.
