Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is happening to the Doctor and Clara at the very beginning of the episode?

Answer: They're chained up on a desolate, rocky plain

Without any explanation of how they got there, "The Caretaker" opens with the Doctor and Clara chained up and left for dead on an alien planet. With the sun blazing down on them, Clara is convinced that they can't escape and that this is the end for them. However, the scene shifts to Clara hurriedly entering a pub to meet Danny, apologising for being late. Danny notices that she is "brown... very brown" and that she "wasn't that brown this morning". Clara quickly blames it on a sunbed.

In the scenes that follow, the Doctor tempts Clara to meet "fish people" (when she meets Danny later in a taxi, she blames the fact that she's wet and has a bit of seaweed in her hair on a "freak shower"), and the two are running down a narrow corridor and trying to avoid being shot at (before Danny arrives at Clara's flat after she gets back and asks if she's ready to go for a run with him; Clara later returns to the apartment absolutely exhausted after two lots of running).
2. Shortly after Clara leaves the TARDIS (having been told by the Doctor that there will be no trip today), which area of London is glowing in red on the TARDIS console's screen?

Answer: East London

Clara enters the TARDIS, expecting yet another trip in time and space, but the Doctor informs her that there won't be one on this particular occasion. Instead, he has a thing he needs to do. Obviously, Clara wants to know what he's up to by taking a look at what's on the TARDIS' screen, but the Doctor flips a switch and hides it, only saying he's going "undercover... deep cover". Once Clara leaves, the Doctor turns his attention to the screen, where there is a map of London with a big red dot on it in East London.

In fact, it turns out to be the exact location of Coal Hill School, where Clara works.
3. What sort of puddle does the Doctor mention he has to deal with?

Answer: A sinister puddle

Clearly astonished that the Doctor's "deep cover" has led to him being the caretaker at Coal Hill School, Clara worriedly asks if there's aliens there and if the school is in danger. The Doctor again downplays by trying to convince her to leave him alone to get on with his task.

He mentions that "the walls need sponging and there's a sinister puddle." He acknowledges that there is a threat but if she stays out his way, there won't be.
4. What does the Doctor say is wrong about what Clara has written on the whiteboard about Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice"?

Answer: The year that the book was written is incorrect

In the middle of teaching an English class, the Doctor appears at the window on a ladder. Surprised, Clara asks what he is doing before he points out that what she's written on the board is wrong. Clara had put that "Pride and Prejudice" was written in 1797 but the Doctor corrects her to 1796, claiming that Jane Austen was too busy in 1797 to have written it.

In actual fact, "Pride and Prejudice" (or as it was then known, "First Impressions") was written over the course of a year between 1796 and 1797, so, technically, the Doctor and Clara are both right and wrong. Major revisions to what we now know as "Pride and Prejudice" occurred in the early 1810s before its first publication in 1813.
5. What subject does the Doctor think Danny teaches at Coal Hill, despite him (and Clara) constantly correcting the Doctor to "Maths"?

Answer: PE

After her class is finished, Clara finds the Doctor talking to Danny and Adrian (the teacher that bears a striking resemblance to the Eleventh Doctor, complete with bowtie and floppy hair). The Doctor seems to find it very hard to believe that Danny is a maths teacher, given that Adrian mentioned that Danny was a soldier.

Naturally, the Doctor assumes that he teaches PE. Danny tries to correct him, saying several times that he teaches maths, but the Doctor simply says, "No, I can't retain that. It's just not going in."
6. What item allows the Doctor to turn invisible?

Answer: A watch

The Doctor explains his plan to Clara in the TARDIS to get rid of the Skovox Blitzer threatening the planet. He gives the Blitzer a brief "whiff" of alien technology, before leading it back to the school and sending it billions of years into the future using special chronodyne generators (or time mines) that he has set up. Obviously not wanting the Blitzer to see him and be blown to pieces, the Doctor uses a special watch to reverse the light waves around him and make him invisible.
7. How far into the future does the Skovox Blitzer actually get sent?

Answer: 74 hours

On the night that the Doctor decides to execute his plan, Danny finds two of the chronodyne generators around the school and wonders what's going on. Meanwhile, the Doctor finds the Skovox Blitzer's hideout and begins luring it to the school, eventually leading it to the hall where he finds his generators offline (because Danny had deactivated one when he picked it up).

The Blitzer arrives and is about to destroy the Doctor when Danny walks in. With the generators now in proximity, they activate once more and the Blitzer is sucked into the time vortex, whisked away to the same spot 3 days in the future (or, to be more precise, 74 hours). Clara turns up and Danny wonders why she's so familiar with the Doctor. Clara tries lying, saying this is all just a play for the summer fete, but all is shortly revealed to Danny, including the Doctor being an alien and the TARDIS being bigger on the inside.
8. How do the teachers describe Courtney Woods, one of the students at Coal Hill?

Answer: "A disruptive influence"

Earlier in the episode, Courtney enters the caretaker's office to get some paper towels for a spillage in one of her classes. She sees the TARDIS and a glowing, green light and asks the Doctor what it is. The Doctor lies and says it's a policeman with a ray gun. Courtney introduces herself as "a disruptive influence" before the Doctor shoos her away. Later, on Parents' Evening, after Danny and Clara leave the TARDIS, Courtney is again in the caretaker's office, wondering what is in the TARDIS. The Doctor shows her and tells her what it really is.

She asks if she can go into space, and Doctor says he'll let her know.
9. When the Blitzer has been lured to the caretaker's office and is about to self-destruct, who distracts it to stop it from blowing up and how do they do it?

Answer: Danny, by jumping over it

With the time vortex unstable and the Blitzer arriving earlier than expected, the Doctor quickly gives Clara the task of luring it to the TARDIS. Obviously concerned for Clara, Danny follows her but remains invisible (thanks to the Doctor's watch which he is still in possession of from earlier).

The Doctor speaks into his special device, attempting to mimic the Blitzer's superior and ordering it to shut down. However, without the proper final input code, the Blitzer begins its self-destruct sequence.

The Doctor desperately begins trying to program the code and asks for Clara to distract the Blitzer so it doesn't blow up. Suddenly, Danny becomes visible again and gets the Blitzer's attention. He runs towards it and somersaults over it, giving the Doctor just enough time to find the code and abort the sequence.
10. Which of these is not one of the three names mentioned by the strange man when the (deceased) policeman wonders where he is?

Answer: Paradise

Earlier in the episode, the Skovox Blitzer claims the life of a policeman, after he investigates its hideout for Coal Hill students playing truant. At the very end, he appears to be fine and is recounting his experience to a man who looks to be some sort of receptionist or clerk (played by British actor and comedian Chris Addison).

When it dawns on him that he can't remember how he escaped, the policeman wonders where he is. The strange man mentions a few names, specifically the afterlife, the promised land and the Nethersphere (the latter being one his is particularly partial to). Missy, the mysterious woman who has appeared a couple of times before, appears from a door and glances in their direction before walking off down a white corridor.
