Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "According to Hoyle" is a well known phrase. What does it mean?

Answer: Following all the rules and regulations exactly

Edmond Hoyle was an Englishman who published rules and regulations about card games that were quickly accepted as the definitive rules. He lived in the C17 and was a writer, private tutor and lawyer. When his rules were published they were quickly accepted as the ones to be followed to prevent arguments at card games and in casinos. The games on the CD follow Hoyle's rules.
2. There are several types of card games on the CD. To which group does "Hearts" belong?

Answer: Trick taking games

This game is played by four players who each play a card in turn. When everyone has played a card, the player of the highest card takes the trick and the points are allocated appropriately. The video programme calculates the winner and there are explanations of what constitutes a winning trick. The problem with Hearts is that you must avoid winning a trick containing a heart, or the Queen of Spades.
Instructions in the rules of the games are included.
3. When the CD begins, the first option is for the player to create a face to represent him or herself from a vast array of options. How many head shapes are offered?

Answer: Five pages of options

In addition to the head shape, there are four skin tones, as well as eyes, nose, mouth and eyebrows. There are also clothes, hair styles and others. In some categories there are several pages of options. The variety of faces that can be made is immense.
4. One child's game is sometimes known as "Kim's Game" or "Pelmanism". The cards are laid out face down for the player to find a pair What personal attribute is it said to develop?

Answer: Memory

The Hoyle version is called "Memory Match". Cards are laid face down on the playing surface and each player in turn has a go at turning over two cards. If they match, then that player takes them and has another turn. The winner is the person who ends up with most cards.
On this screen version, you can play alone aiming at a high score, or against an on screen opponent.
5. In some games players can win "Hoyle Bucks". What use is this money?

Answer: You can use it to enhance your game background

Hoyle bucks can provide packs of cards with different backs, or other backgrounds to play on and various other things which, without altering the play make the screen more interesting. There are no blocked games and a winning streak is as much of a chance here as in real life, but Hoyle Bucks offer numerous options for background enhancement.
6. In games that need opponents, the programmes will supply cartoon characters for you to play against. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: A nurse named Gloria

Each of these characters has a personality which can be found by clicking "bio" (for biography) next to their name. They talk in character, and can be made more or less talkative according to your preference. There are also miniature faces on screen which offer you the option of reacting to the play in either a positive or a negative manner.
7. How many people, beside the human, are needed to play "Cribbage" in this version?

Answer: One

"Cribbage" is usually played by two people, so the human player needs one on-line opponent.
There is the image of a "Cribbage" score board with red and blue pegs that move round it to record the points. The game, in common with all the others, does the scoring for you and explains how the scores are reached in the way used by live players- eg. "Fifteen for 2, Fifteen for 4, run of three for 7."
8. "Solitaire" has a different name that is used more often in the UK. What is it?

Answer: "Patience"

"Canfield" is only one version of solitaire. There are forty five traditional patience games on the "Hoyle Classic CD" and several arcade games. What is more, the programme will keep a running total of how many games of each you have won or lost. You can mark your favourites so that only those are presented when you start.
9. Which of these games is not generally considered suitable for children because it involves betting?

Answer: "Blackjack"

There are several games fit for children of a very young age. They will need initial instruction, but then are easy to play alone and the backgrounds are to children's taste. Many children love card games and soon develop a facility with numbers from them.
10. In some games there is an "Options" choice, with musical backgrounds available to play while your game is running. Where will you find the list?

Answer: In "Environment"

Among others the music choices available are "jazz", "card theme" and "ocean". Some choices are basic, but Hoyle Bucks allows you to purchase more. You can choose backgrounds of several kinds and add ornaments such as a vase of flowers. It is possible to have a fun time playing with the options before you even look at a pack of cards and, with the various characters and their personalities, this makes for a very enjoyable set of games.
