Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Each generation has released a new sea of Pokemon for players to train. In comparison with the original 151 released in the first games, which of the first five generations released the lowest number of Pokemon?

Answer: The "Precious Metals" Generation: "Pokemon Gold and Silver"

"Pokemon Gold and Silver" unleashed 100 new Pokemon, making the total 251 Pokemon. "Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire" increased this number to 386, releasing 135 Pokemon. "Pokemon Diamond and Pearl" added another 107 Pokemon. The only generation of the first five to release more than 151 Pokemon was the monochrome generation, releasing 156 Pokemon. "Pokemon Black and White" are also the first games since "Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow" to be named after colors.
2. Every generation has released many regular Pokemon, as well as legendary Pokemon, of which there is one in each game. "Pokemon Red and Blue" had five legendary Pokemon: Moltres, Zapdos, Articuno, Mew, and Mewtwo. Of the following four generations, which generation released the most legendary Pokemon?

Answer: "Pokemon Diamond and Pearl"

"Pokemon Gold and Silver" released Entei, Suicune, Raikou, Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Celebi. "Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire" released Latios, Latias, Regice, Regirock, Registeel, Rayquaza, Kyogre, Groudon, Deoxys, and Jirachi. "Pokemon Diamond and Pearl" released Regigigas, Cresselia, Darkrai, Arceus, Shaymin, Mesprit, Azelf, Uxie, Manaphy, Phione, Heatran, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. Finally, "Pokemon Black and White" released Victini, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Keldeo, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, Zekrom, Reshiram, Kyurem, Meloetta, and Genesect.

This means that Gen II released six legendary Pokemon, Gen III released ten legendary Pokemon, and Gen V released twelve legendary Pokemon, losing to Gen IV by one legendary Pokemon.

The hint is a reference to the Distortion World, home of Giratina. Giratina is one of the legendary Pokemon from "Diamond" and "Pearl", and the mascot of "Pokemon Platinum".
3. Every main "Pokemon" game uses a Pokemon from its respective generation as a representation of the game. Which of the following is incorrect?

Answer: The first release of the first generation "Pokemon" games did not use Venusaur as a mascot; instead, they used Pikachu

Venusaur was used as a mascot, but only in Japan. The original "Pokemon" games were "Pokemon Red and Green". However, "Green" was replaced with "Pokemon Blue" in other countries. This was later changed with the release of "FireRed" and "LeafGreen", in which Venusaur was used instead of Blastoise to symbolize "LeafGreen".

Nintendo chose to make "LeafGreen" because it would seem less like the two were at war and "LeafGreen" was easier to translate to other languages.

I couldn't do the full-on hint without giving the answer, so I went with the word that sounds closest: VenuSAUR, Sore. Get it?
4. Many people perceive certain Pokemon as legendary, despite having features that make them distinctly non-legendary. What are the general rules of being considered a legendary Pokemon?

Answer: Unable to breed, unable to evolve, only one available in-game, and extremely difficult to catch

Most legendaries cannot produce young, only appear once in the game, and are difficult to catch. However, Manaphy is able to reproduce. As such, Manaphy is the only legendary Pokemon thus far to breed. It is also the only legendary to be received as an egg.

Although there are some non-legendary Pokemon that can breed, they evolve and therefor cannot be considered legendary.

As a side note, the television series showed a baby Lugia as well, despite Lugia not being able to breed in-game without Game Shark, Action Replay, or glitches.

The hint was to eliminate the location-based answers.
5. Alongside Generation II, which of the first five generations lacked a Pokemon Tower-like location?

Answer: Gen IV

Thanks to the release of "HeartGold and SoulSilver," Generation IV is missing a Pokemon Tower as well. Other than that, every main "Pokemon" game has had a Pokemon Tower (in the first five generations).

In Generation III, the "Pokemon Tower" was actually a mountain, on top of which you obtained the orb that was meant to control Kyogre or Groudon, depending on your version.

In Generation IV, there was a Hallowed Tower just south of Solaceon town.

Generation V had the Celestial Tower.

However, in Generation II, the Pokemon Tower has been replaced by the Radio Tower.
6. In what "Pokemon" generation did Natures begin to affect the growth of a Pokemon?

Answer: Generation III

Natures were introduced with the release of "Ruby and Sapphire". Since then, the nature of a Pokemon has had a direct effect on the stat growth of every Pokemon.

The hint is a reference to the abundance of water in Hoenn.
7. In which generation were the 27th and 28th forms of Unown introduced?

Answer: Generation III

Generation II released 26 Unown: one for each letter of the alphabet. However, Generation III released ? and ! Unown.

The hint is the location of the Unown in the Sevii Islands, Tanoby Ruins, only accessible in the third-generation "Red" and "Blue" remakes.
8. Every generation of "Pokemon" generally revolves around three types as starting Pokemon: Fire, Water, and Grass. Most of the time, these Pokemon come with a secondary type. Which generation was the first to release a Fire Pokemon starter that had no second type?

Answer: Generation II

Generation V released the Tepig line, which evolved into a Fire/Fighting type. This Pokemon shares this trait with the previous two Fire-type starting Pokemon, Infernape (Gen IV) and Blaziken (Gen III). Generation I, of course, released the fan-favorite Charizard, a Fire/Flying Pokemon. Typhlosion is the only final-form starting Pokemon to be a pure Fire-type of the first five generations.

The hint is a reference to Cyndaquil's name (Cinder, Cynda).
9. Only two generations have first gyms that aren't Rock-type: Johto, whose first gym was a Flying gym; and Unova, whose first gym depended on your starting Pokemon. Which of the following types has NOT had their own gym as of Gen V?

Answer: Dark

There have been two Dragon gyms (one in Blackthorn and one in Opelucid), two Bug gyms (one in Azalea and one in Castelia), and three Ice gyms (One in Mahogany, one in Snowpoint, and one in Icirrus). However, there have been Dark-type Elite Four trainers.

The hint is a reference to Umbreon, Eevee's nighttime happiness evolution and the first Dark Pokemon in the PokeDex.
10. Which three Pokemon types are most often used for bosses up to Gen V? Note: Bosses include gym leaders, evil team leaders, members of the Elite Four, the Champion, and the Battle Frontier.

Answer: Water, Fighting, and Psychic

Water, Fighting, and Psychic Pokemon each have a total of six bosses in the Pokemon games: Misty of Cerulean, Wallace of Sootopolis (Elite Four in "Pokemon Emerald"), Juan of Sootopolis (Only in "Pokemon Emerald"), Crasher Wake of Pastoria, Cress of Striaton, and Archie of Team Aqua for Water bosses; Sabrina of Saffron, Will of the Elite Four (Generations II and IV only), Tate and Liza of Mossdeep, Anabel of the Battle Frontier, Lucian of the Sinnoh Elite Four, and Caitlin of the Unova Elite Four for Psychic bosses; and Bruno of the Elite Four, Chuck of Cianwood, Brawly of Dewford, Greta of the Battle Arena, Maylene of Veilstone, and Marshall of the Unova Elite Four for Fighting bosses.

If Tate and Liza are counted separately, that makes Psychic the most common used type for bosses.
