Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these types of mushrooms was introduced in "Super Mario Bros. 2" (1988 NES)?

Answer: Mushroom Block

The Mushroom Block cannot be eaten, but it is thrown at enemies to inflict damage. They can also be stacked to allow Mario and friends to reach previously inaccessible heights. POW mushrooms do not exist, but POW blocks, introduced in "Mario Bros." (1983 Arcade), do.
2. Which type of mushroom was introduced in "Super Mario Bros. - The Lost Levels"; also known as "Super Mario Bros. 2 Japan"?

Answer: Poisonous Mushroom

The poisonous mushroom has the same effect as an enemy in "The Lost Levels". If Mario or Luigi touches it, they will be reduced in size, or they will lose a life. The poisonous mushroom appears in "Super Smash Bros. Melee", and it makes whoever touches it smaller and weaker than normal. In "Melee", the condition eventually wears off.
3. I am a green mushroom with white spots. I have been around since the beginning of the "Super Mario" series. What am I?

Answer: 1-up Mushroom

In "The Lost Levels", (Wii and Famicom Disc System) the 1-up Mushroom looked fiendishly like the poisonous mushroom, which could be irritating. 1-up mushrooms are great in number in "Super Mario Galaxy". If the player is playing as Luigi, Peach may send up to twenty 1-up mushrooms in a single letter! The dried shroom was introduced in "Paper Mario" for the Nintendo 64.

It replenishes a meager 1 HP. Note: 1-up Mushrooms are not green in "Super Mario Bros. 2".
4. If Mario gives Tayce T. a regular mushroom to cook in "Paper Mario" (N64), what will he get back (if Tayce T. doesn't make a mistake)?

Answer: A Fried Shroom

The Fried Shroom is amongst the most basic of recipes in "Paper Mario" (Nintendo 64, 2001). It can be mixed with other ingredients later in the game to make more complex and rewarding recipes. Tayce T. can be found in her home in Toad Town just south of central Toad Town and just north of the railroad.

The mistake I referred to is actually a food item. If Tayce T. messes up the recipe, she will give Mario a "mistake". A mistake replenishes just 1 HP and 1 FP.
5. Speaking of Mario in paper form, mushrooms can commonly be found in what form in "Super Paper Mario"?

Answer: Shake

Mushroom shakes are the form of mushroom that can be carried in the inventory in "Super Paper Mario". Regular mushrooms are consumed on contact for a small health boost. The shakes come in "Super" and "Ultra" variations with increasing health boosts.
6. This type of mushroom in "New Super Mario Bros." helped the brothers by making them grow to colossal proportions allowing them to smash anything in their way. What is the name of this oversized mushroom?

Answer: Mega

The mega mushroom is fairly rare inside levels, but there are item houses hosted by Toadsworth that give away these massive shrooms for free an unlimited number of times. After it wears off with time, a number of 1-up mushrooms will be given based on the quantity of things smashed by the user. Up to five may be given.

The effects of the mushroom automatically wear off if Mario or Luigi smashes the flag at the end of the level.
7. The player starts with four mushrooms in the time trials for "Mario Kart 64" (N64 and Wii).

Answer: False

The racer starts with three mushrooms at the beginning of a time trial in "Mario Kart 64". The mushrooms enable a speed boost to be used. Cleverly timed boosts will allow for the best time. Three mushrooms can also be found as a power-up in actual races via item boxes.
8. While not really a mushroom, the moon found in "Super Mario World" (SNES) is worth how many 1-ups?

Answer: Three

The 3-up moon is a very rare item. It is a crescent moon, and one can be found near the secret exit of Cheese Bridge Area. Strangely, in the Donut Ghost House, there is a series of five item blocks that have single 1-up mushrooms in them. Instead of putting a 3-up moon and two 1-up mushrooms, Nintendo opted to put five 1-up mushrooms. I wonder why...
9. The standard super mushroom is primarily what color in "Super Mario 64"?

Answer: It does not exist

The original red spotted super mushroom, a series mainstay, is not found in the original version of "Super Mario 64" (N64, 1996). In fact, it is not found in the first three 3D Mario platformers, "Super Mario 64", "Super Mario Sunshine" (GameCube, 2002), and "Super Mario Galaxy" (Wii, 2007). For those who answered red, that would be the correct answer for almost every Mario platformer except for "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" and "Super Mario Bros.", in which the mushroom is primarily a shade of yellow. Though the red mushroom has had varying effects in different games, ranging from increase in size to increase in max health, it is in just about all of them. I said the super mushroom was not found in the original version in the first sentence because it is found in "Super Mario 64 DS". Even there, though, it is rare.
10. In "Mario Strikers Charged", (Wii 2007) what does a mushroom do?

Answer: Gives the currently selected player a short speed boost

The speed boost the mushroom gives is best used when racing for a loose ball. The starman gives temporary invincibility. Only Mario and Luigi can grow by using their special captain ability. As Super Mario and Super Luigi respectively, the two can smash other players into the ground for an easy shot.

The closest thing to a free Mega Strike would be the use of a cheat or the use of a starman. "Mario Strikers Charged" is a soccer/football game, and it was one of the first Wii games to have online capabilities.
