Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which "Mario" game can you visit the Donut Plains?

Answer: Super Mario World (SNES)

After Yoshi's Island in "Super Mario World" (SNES), Mario can advance into the Donut Plains, an area containing not only the Green Switch Palace, but the first Ghost House and a 'Top Secret Area' home to all the supplies one many need to get to the end of the game. The area is presided over by Morton Koopa and, if the player so chooses, they can skip around most of the area by reaching the Star Road in the Plains' southeast corner. The Donut plains also appear in the "Mario Kart" series.

"Super Mario World" (SNES) was the first game in the series to feature Yoshi the Dinosaur. Appearing on the console in 1990, it was the top-selling game on the SNES.
2. Which of these "Mario" games is the first to feature Lumas?

Answer: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

Lumas are star-like creatures from outer space, and when Mario jets into the stratosphere and beyond in "Super Mario Galaxy" he ends up encountering a whole bunch of them on his quest to save Princess Peach. Lumas can serve as aides during the course of the journey; sometimes, when they're fed, they can lead to far-away galaxies. Lumas make reappearances in "Super Mario Galaxy 2" and "Mario Kart Wii".

"Super Mario Galaxy", released on the Wii in 2007, was one of the top-selling games on the console. Using a full range of three dimensions, Mario can navigate around planets and stars, float through zero-gravity, and transform with new power-ups (like Bee and Boo). The sequel was released in 2010.
3. Which "Mario" game was playable on the CD-i?

Answer: Hotel Mario

"Hotel Mario", one of the only games on the Philips CD-i and, surprisingly, it was one of the first Nintendo games to appear on a disc. Despite this, however, the game was horribly-panned. Unlike almost all of the other games in the series (platformers), the game involved Mario shutting doors teeming with enemies and nothing more. Seriously.

The Philips CD-i flopped shortly thereafter. It remains one of the only "Mario" games not on a console fully backed by Nintendo (although they did help develop for Philips at this time). The game was released in 1994.
4. What game in the "Mario" series was the first in which the player could assume the role of Princess Toadstool?

Answer: Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES)

Originally created under the name "Doki Doki Panic!" in Japan and then rebuilt as a "Mario" game for U.S. audiences, "Super Mario Bros. 2" allowed players to take on the role of Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool, all of which handled differently in the unique courses presented. Of particular note, the Princess was able to glide through the air; this ability was carried over into the "Super Smash Bros." series. The game was also the first to feature Birdo.

"Super Mario Bros. 2" was released on the NES in 1988. It also appeared as part of the line-up in the SNES compilation "Super Mario All-Stars".
5. Which "Mario" game featured the Mecha Fly Guy?

Answer: "Mario Party" (N64)

If you happened to enter the Mini-Game House in the original "Mario Party" (after purchasing the item) you would've found the Mecha Fly Guy sitting on the table. If you picked it up you could rotate the analog stick in circles as fast as possible to wind it up and send it on a trip around the room. There was no real reward, but it was one of the many mini-games in the original "Mario Party" to be prone to blistering; using your palm to turn the analog stick in games like this, 'Paddle Battle', and 'Tug of War' could lead to painful stress on the hand, so much so that third-party companies made gloves for this purpose.

"Mario Party", the first in the long-running series of mini-game collections, was released on the N64 in 1998. Iterations appeared on every Nintendo handheld and console since.
6. Which "Mario" game was the first to feature the Super Leaf, transforming Mario into a raccoon?

Answer: "Super Mario Bros. 3" (NES)

"Super Mario Bros. 3" also introduced players to the Tanooki Suit, the Frog Suit, the Warp Whistle, and Kuribo's Shoe. None of these, however, were as notable as the Super Leaf which, when used as early as the game's first side-scrolling level, allowed Mario to transform into a raccoon who, with enough momentum, could use his tail to fly. The leaf disappeared in subsequent games (it was replaced by a cape in "Super Mario World" (SNES)). It didn't reappear in a platformer until "Super Mario 3D Land" (3DS), over twenty years later.

"Super Mario Bros. 3" (NES) first appeared on store shelves in 1988 and then again in "Super Mario All-Stars" on the SNES. It's commonly regarded as one of the best NES games ever made by several gaming outlets.
7. In which "Mario" game could you visit Noki Bay?

Answer: "Super Mario Sunshine" (GCN)

Noki Bay was one of the many tropical-themed worlds found in "Super Mario Sunshine", one of the few "Mario" platformers for the Gamecube home console. In addition to this stage, players could wander Plaza Delfino, Pinna Park, Rialto Beach, and Corona Mountain (and other hotspots). Noki Bay had a particular underwater theme. Throughout the game, Mario had to save Isle Delfino from an evil version of himself, going around and polluting the entire place. Using the FLUDD apparatus, he could clean up crime and, inevitably, save the Princess yet again.

"Super Mario Sunshine" was released on the Gamecube in 2002; it became a Player's Choice title shortly thereafter.
8. Which game in the "Mario" series featured Mario as the playable character?

Answer: "Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix" (GCN)

Surprisingly, the "DDR" spinoff is the only one of these in which the player takes on Mario's role-- he must battle Bowser, Wario, and Waluigi in dance fights to reclaim stolen Music Keys and save the kingdom. The game had a relatively easy difficulty considering, but was the only "Dance Dance Revolution" title on a Nintendo system at the time. It was released on the Gamecube in 2005.

The other games did not feature Mario as the main character. Both "Mario is Missing!" and "Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon" starred Luigi while "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" featured Yoshi (as he carried Baby Mario). Princess Peach and Bowser have also starred in their own games, and so has Wario.
9. Which game in the "Mario" series begins with Mario going to the castle to enjoy some delicious cake?

Answer: "Super Mario 64" (N64)

Always a classic, Nintendo 64 gamers could never forget the original note to kick off the launch game:

"Dear Mario:
Please come to the castle. I've baked a cake for you.
Yours truly-- Princess Toadstool.
Peach"

This was the first game in which Princess Toadstool took on the Peach moniker and it was also the first platforming game in the "Mario" series to be in 3D ("Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars", before it, was also presented in 3D, but never to this extent). The goal was simple-- jump into paintings, find 120 stars, and beat Bowser.

"Super Mario 64" was a seminal classic for the console, paving the way for new 3D adventures in the series. It was released in 1996.
10. Which "Mario" game features enemies known as Artichokers?

Answer: "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" (SNES)

Artichokers appear about mid-way through the game; they're plant-like creatures and, of all things, they use the special technique Static E!. This game did feature a number of unique creatures never before seen in other "Mario" games. You can visit Moleville and Nimbus Land, Barrel Volcano and Booster Tower. While many "Mario" series staples including Bowser and Princess Toadstool are around (they actually join your party), newcomers Mallow and Geno also join the party.

"Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" was released in 1996 as a joint-venture between Nintendo and Squaresoft, the creators of "Final Fantasy" and it has since become one of the more notable RPGs on the console (and in the Nintendo first-party line-up). The game relies on turn-based RPG battles and puzzle-solving throughout.
