Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Korean equivalent to "Hello" in English means - Peace be with you. What is the basic Korean greeting equivalent to "hello" in English?

Answer: Annyonghaseyo

Korean has many variations on this standard greeting based on correct level of politeness. When in doubt this is the best greeting to use.
2. Have you committed a social faux pas? How do you say "I'm sorry" in Korean?

Answer: Mianhamnida

The Korean language is highly differentiated according to level of politeness. "Mianhamnida" is the polite formal level of speech. In most cases a simple "Mianwhayo" is sufficient.
3. Food is an important part of Korean culture. Which of these dishes is served at many Korean meals?

Answer: Kimchi

Kimchi is a delicious side dish served at many Korean meals. It comes in a myriad of varieties and flavours, but consists generally of salted and fermented vegetables, usually with a base of cabbage or radish.
4. Korean uses two counting systems "Sino-tibetan" and "Native Korean". How do you count to 5 using the "Native Korean" counting system?

Answer: hana, dul, se, ne, taseot

The two number systems are often used together. For example when telling time "Native Korean" numbers are used for hour and "Sino-tibetan" numbers are used for minutes. Example: "taseot shi shipo pun" is 5:15.
5. Before buying you should always check the price. How do you say "How much is it?" in Korean?

Answer: Olma immnikka?

Korean uses "Sino-Tibetan" numbers for money. Example: Obaeg won = 500 won.
6. Maybe the most important question you might have to ask. How do you ask "Where is the bathroom?" in Korean?

Answer: Hwajangshil oti e issumnikka?

It's made easier by the signs with a little man or woman on the door.
"Hwajang" means make-up so you're asking "Where is the make-up room?" Similar to English I guess ie. "Where is the rest room?", etc.
7. Easy directions when helping the cabbie. In Korean, what is the correct way of saying "Go left and go right"?

Answer: Wenchokk , Orunchokk

"Wen" means left, "Orun" means right, and "Chokk" means direction.
8. Again, food is very important in Korean culture. What is the best response when asked if your meal is delicious?

Answer: Mashistseoyo

A typical Korean meal consists of a main course complimented by many side dishes - "Aju Mashistseoyo".
9. Small talk about the weather is important everywhere. How do say "Now it is raining"?

Answer: Chikum bi ga omnida.

The rainy season in Southern Korea is called "Chang Ma", and it will rain everyday during that time.
10. More niceties that are essential to the Korean language. How do you say goodbye when you are leaving and the other person is staying?

Answer: Annyonghigyeseyo.

Again, just to make things more complicated, Korean has two versions of this basic goodbye. When both are leaving say "Annyonghigaseyo", when staying and the other person is leaving say "Annyonghigaseyo", and as in the question when you are leaving and the other person is staying say "Annyonghigyeseyo".
