Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art. What does "taekwondo" mean?

Answer: The way of the foot and the fist

"Tae" means foot, "kwon" means fist, and "do" means way or art.

Taekwondo has been an Olympic event since 1992. However, due to the scoring system that rewards kicks to the head, Olympic-level taekwondo sparring looks very different from what most taekwondo students practice (even black belts!).
2. When practicing taekwondo, you should always wear your "dobok". What is it?

Answer: uniform

"Do" means way or art, and "bok" is clothing.

A dobok typically has a v-neck, however the closure (pull over, cross-over, etc.) can vary.

Wearing a dobok can make certain moves with a partner (self defense, throws) easier.
3. One of the principles of taekwondo is "kuk gi", which can be explained as "using your mind to control your body." What is the translation of "kuk gi"?

Answer: Self-control

Self-control is usually not a problem for adult students, but can be a major issue for children.

While learning to punch and kick can be fun, discipline and self-control are important and have many benefits for children learning martial arts. Just sitting still and following directions can be a challenge for some students.
4. The instructor calls out, "Cha ryeot!" and all the students stand up straight, eyes forward. What does "cha ryeot" mean?

Answer: Attention

"Cha ryeot" is sometimes followed by the command "kyung nae," or bow.

Bowing and shaking hands is a sign of respect.
5. After completing a form or pattern, the student should remain still until given the command "bah ro." What does "bah ro" mean?

Answer: Return to starting position

The starting position will depend on the form or pattern you are demonstrating.

After returning to the starting position, the student will be directed to stand at attention or a rest position, and then be given some instruction on what to improve or comments on the form, before being dismissed or asked to perform another task.
6. Physical fitness is an important part of taekwondo. The instructor may ask you to do "yul" jumping jacks. How many jumping jacks should you do?

Answer: Ten

Counting from 1 to 10 in Korean: hana, dool, set, net, dasot, yasot, ilgop, yadol, ahop, yul.

A different numbering system is used for rank (first degree, second degree, etc.): il, ee, sam, sah, oh, yook, chil, pal, koo, ship.
7. Similar to the term "dojo" in Japanese, what is the meaning of the Korean word "dojang"?

Answer: School

"Do" means way or art, and "jang" is place.

Modern "dojangs" will have mats or a padded floor to protect students from injury during training. If a competition or tournament is held somewhere other than a "dojang", such as a gymnasium or meeting room, mats may not be available.
8. When learning your form or pattern, you may have to remember to "kihap". What is the translation of "kihap"?

Answer: Yell

Breathing is important, and a "kihap" will help with proper breathing techniques.

The other purposes of a "kihap" are to scare or intimidate an opponent, or to demonstrate confidence or victory.
9. While taking class, pay attention to the "sah bin nim". What is that?

Answer: Instructor

The chief instructor is "chun sah nim".

The owner of a school is "kwan jang nim", though the word "kwan" is used for school in the more abstract sense (i.e. a school of thought or a school of martial arts technique), while "dojang" is the physical building where a school is located.
10. After a few years of dedication and training, you'll eventually earn your first "dan". What does "dan" mean?

Answer: Black belt degree

Q: How long does it take the average person to earn a black belt?
A: The average person does not earn a black belt.

Gup is the ranking used for the different colored belts, dan is used for the degrees of black belts. Different schools use different colored belt systems, but they usually start at white.
